Today we’d like to introduce you to LA based Costume Designer Jacob Kosarian.
Hi Jacob, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Santa Barbara from Sweden in 2012 to study theatre with an emphasis on costume design. During my college years, I began designing costumes for one-act plays. A friend in the film department approached me for help with costumes for his short film, and this led to more student film projects. Eventually, I began designing costumes for feature films. Today, my passion lies in designing costumes for scripted content. However, in between film projects, I enjoy styling commercials or still adverts.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When it rains, it pours. Often, one receives multiple job offers and has to turn down great opportunities. Then, there can be weeks of complete silence. Can go into weeks of complete silence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Costumes play a crucial role in storytelling, as they offer a glimpse into a character’s backstory, personality, and inner journey. My objective is to create outfits that support and enhance the narrative and leave a lasting impression on the audience. I want them to remember what the characters wore and how the clothing made them feel and contributed to their understanding of the story.
Two of my most notable projects include the movie Chariot, where I dressed a talented ensemble cast featuring John Malkovich, Thomas Mann, Rosa Salazar, Shane West, and Vernon Davis. With the trust of our director, Adam Sigal, I brought his vision to life and enjoyed every step of the process. Another career highlight was designing costumes for the yet-to-be-released film Man in the Long Black Coat, which stars Christopher Lloyd, Mark Feuerstein, Neal McDonough, and Dermot Mulroney. Working with Mulroney was a dream come true, dating back to my childhood when I watched My Best Friend’s Wedding in Sweden with my mom and dreamed of a career in Hollywood.
As a Swedish-Persian designer, my unique perspective is shaped by my European upbringing and Middle Eastern heritage, resulting in a distinct aesthetic that sets me apart in Hollywood.
