Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Binder.
Garrett, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like most of us, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. During my senior year of high school, looking for colleges, I picked a great communications school, Ithaca College, because it had a good film program. My uncle was a big time Director of Photography in LA at the time, and I saw his house, his Ferrari, his lifestyle and how he basically told everyone what to do while sitting from a chair and thought to myself, “I can TOTALLY do that.” And that’s how I picked my career in the film world!
I graduated, moved to LA and off I went working on sitcoms, films, commercials, you name it, but I felt little to no pride doing my job and I couldn’t see myself pulling cables around and changing lenses for 30 more years. No offense to anyone in that industry, but it just wasn’t for me. I started mentioning this to people on the set and I started hearing the name Tony Robbins float around. “You should go check out Tony Robbins, I think he could help you.” At the time, I had no idea who this guy was and had no idea that personal development even existed!
After several people had mentioned Tony’s name to me and I ignored them all, I went down to San Diego where I’m from to visit my family. I went to pick up the mail one day and laying right on top of the mail was a flyer that said, “Tony Robbins coming to San Diego.” I immediately looked up at the sky and said sarcastically, “OK, I get it, I’ll go!”
I called up to purchase my ticket and was shocked. $600 for four days and Tony’s not even going to be there himself?!?!? (I’ve heard the same thing said to me several thousand times in my career since and I always laugh now because I know the value of it) I begrudgingly bought the ticket for no other reason than to see what he was all about, knowing I could get a refund if I didn’t like it. And I was certain I wasn’t going to like it. Little did I know how much that decision to attend his event would change my life.
After jumping up and down for several hours and hugging several random, sweaty strangers, I was wondering what the hell I had gotten myself into. Something inside me told me to “fake it till you make it” so I did and the rest, as they say, is history. I absolutely loved every single minute of it. I realized in that moment my purpose in life was to inspire others and help other people. That same weekend I made the difficult decision to quit the film biz, where I was completely comfortable, made a great living for a single guy in LA and had built tons of connections. Was it easy to make that choice? No. Was it necessary to live the life of my dreams? Absolutely.
I moved back to San Diego and enrolled myself in a life coaching school to start a career as a life coach. A year later, I was recruited by a headhunter (who I met at that very same Tony Robbins event) to apply for a job at Tony’s company and thought, why do it on my own when I can work for the best in the world? 15 years later, I am still here changing lives and I’ve never looked back once! I am very proud to say I completely live life on my terms; I have an incredible family, have traveled all over the world, created financial independence for my family and I and am still working my dream job where I am a consistent top producer and have won all kinds of awards including a trip to Fiji to Tony’s private resort, and I could go on and on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The decision to leave my comfort zone in the film industry was not an easy one but looking back now, it was the best decision I ever could have made because it’s allowed me to live the life I have now. Of course, there were struggles; I almost didn’t get hired at Tony Robbins because I had no prior sales experience, I had a very slow start earning money as a product sales rep when I started, my wife and I separated for a year, and I’m sure there were many more struggles along the way…I’ve just chosen to forget about them and stay focused on what I still want to achieve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve worn many hats working for the #1 life and business coach, Tony Robbins, and my current role is by far and away the most fulfilling. I am a Coaching Results Specialist which means I deliver 1 hour, complimentary coaching sessions to anyone who is really serious about changing their lives and then if they enjoy what they got out of my session, I enroll them into a coaching program with our team.
I’ve built my reputation at Robbins Research International (RRI) as someone who truly cares about the client and ALWAYS does what’s best for them, even if it’s painful or uncomfortable. In 45 minutes, we can uncover what your main goals in life are, what’s really holding you back and create enough leverage on yourself to finally take action and actually make the changes you know you needed to make a long time ago.
If you or anyone you know would like to have a complimentary sample session with me, I would love the opportunity to meet you and see if I can add value to your life in any way. Just send me an email and we can go from there: [email protected].
What makes you happy?
There’s not a lot that doesn’t make me happy honestly. I love life! What makes me the most happy is being a great dad to my son, Luca and knowing I’m making a difference to him. I also really feel good when I know I have helped someone out of a rut and helped them discover something in themselves they didn’t even know they had.
