Today we’d like to introduce you to Fidel Avendano.
Hi Fidel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I guess it all started when I was a young boy, and my mother would call me a “metiche” (nosey) after she caught me eavesdropping in her conversations with her comadres (friends). Having kids of my own now, I’ve learned that curiosity is a normal stage of a young child’s development, but as my mom will tell you today I was different, I was beyond metiche. I made myself part of that conversation. I went from flying on the wall to holding court. Fast forward to a night in the Spring of 2018, I asked myself, Fidel what are you doing for your community. I woke up the morning after and had the idea to record conversations with my family & friends to share personal stories that could help someone going through a similar situation. So my wife, tired of hearing me talk about it, bought me my first recorder Zoom H6, which I still use to date, and sent me to the garage (studio) to get started. The podcast journey started off with a co-host, a different name but same concept as it is now but after a year, we decided to go our separate ways due to creative differences. Being the metiche that I am, I could not stay away so I created Talking Again Podcast aka The TAP. A place where you can come hang out, chat about your passions, hobbies or business but most importantly talk about it in a comfortable, judge-free zone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. There is a pressure of putting out a weekly episode, preserving consistency to maintain some sort of relevancy. Most podcasters start off as local podcasters. Starting from scratch without a built in audience like some juggernauts such as Joe Rogan or Marc Maron, just a couple of podcasters I listened to in the past. It’s very stressful to continue to release a new episode and watch the views & follows hoping to get those powerful numbers. Another one of the most stressful things for me was producing the podcast from soup to nuts. Being the host, producer, editor, publisher, etc. of a video/ audio podcast and maintaining a work-life balance with a wife and 2 boys in sports is challenging. If it wasn’t for my supportive wife, there would not be a TAP, at least not from me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For many years, I worked as a content merchandiser in the automotive industry. It was a very laid-back schedule giving me plenty of time to podcast and do one of the things I’m most passionate about, civil duty. I volunteered in my son’s baseball Little League as a coach and joined the board of directors as Player Agent. Today, I am employed in public works as a general maintenance worker. The job is great, but I do not have the flexible hours I did before, so my time podcasting is limited but it did not take away time from starting a travel baseball team for my son, which now takes up most of my free time, but I would not trade it for anything in the world as I mentioned before that’s what I’m most passionate about family and civil work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I am one of those persons that believe luck is just when preparation meets opportunity. Years of being curious, attentive, helpful, and a little selfish has brought me many joys in my life. When I see a good opportunity for growth, I take it. Has it come back and bit me in the back, yes but I’ve used it as a learning lesson.
