Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Stevenson.
Hi Erin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in Houston, Tx…I’d been singing my entire life, literally since birth. I used to joke with it though until my Uncle made me sing for real. I continued all the way even after graduating college. I tried to drop out of school but my parents wouldn’t let me. After giving music a go after college, things went well but I wanted stability so I decided to get a wonderful job working for NASA….even that wasn’t fulfilling, I believed it was because I wasn’t doing what I was created to do. One morning I woke up bored and tired of living a purposeless life. I walked into my boss’s office while working for NASA and told him to fire me. I laid my CD on his desk and told him to listen to it, and if he felt like I sucked I’d return to work the next day with a smile on my face…that evening I received my notice…the next day I was asked to tour with Janet Jackson.” I’ve been singing ever since…faith and purpose.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
EVERYONE has their opinions of what you should look like, what you should sound like, the kinds of songs you should sing. When I was young they said I wrote too mature, now that I’m older they want me to be young, or skinny, or thick…do you get what I’m saying lol…the only opinion that matters is your own. It took a second to get it, I knew I had something, but it took me a second to be ok with whatever that something was and to own it and to rock it and to not care what anyone else had to say. Now of course you listen to wisdom, but conform the core of you for no one…that’s when things began to happen for me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer, songwriter, producer, and performer. I used to sing backgrounds for the likes of all your favorite artists such as Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, Rihana, John Legend, Janet Jackson, JLo, and so many more. That’s wonderful and it was a blessing, but there was always something tugging at me to say what I wanted to say, to sing the notes I wanted to sing, to move the way I wanted to dance. So I decided to take a leap of faith and go for it, even when some said it was too late for me. However, I’ve had several hits in the UK, made several charts here in America, was voted Indie Soul Artist of the Year in 2021, finally signed a record deal to Innervision Records, my latest single “Believe” is on the charts, another single to follow this March, and another full album this summer.
