Today we’d like to introduce you to Emerson Niemchick.
Hi Emerson, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in a small town in Michigan. I did anything creative I could for as early as I could remember. Creativity wasn’t just enough, there was always a spectacle to be added; a performance to do. Puppet shows for elementary classes, doing voices when we would read literature… just always some added theatrical “spice.” I was weird kid. Did theater. Made movies in college with friends. Eventually, this lead to making bigger projects and in my heart of hearts I knew that LA was the final bus stop. It was just always there. So in 2017, moved to Los Angeles and have been here ever since. I am a storyteller and artist. I like to feel my way through the piece.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
LA is a great city in that it tells you who you are and either evolves you or destroys you. If you are reading this and have suffered from anxiety, depression, rejection, break ups, divorce, loss, self-love, apathy, and questioning your very purpose and identity, you are part of an incredible journey! I don’t want to burden the readers with too much of a wet towel, but yes…. Many struggles along the way. I went through a very sad divorce, lost pets, lost possessions, and truly buried an entire reality. They say divorce and death are the two heaviest experiences a human can bear… whoever “they” are didn’t lie. It’s truly a “soft” death; the reality, the ego, and the version of you up until that point utterly collapse. Even harder than that was trying to hold onto what I refer to as an Ultimate Truth. That Ultimate Truth is the thing you believe and build your goals, dreams, thoughts, and actions around; you honor that truth. The largest obstacle has been creating mental fortitude to guard that Truth. It’s different for every person and nobody can convince you of that Truth other than yourself. That’s been my biggest challenge thus far, is trying to filter out the books, lectures, Tedtalks, therapy, chakras, crystals, meditations, etc. into what actually nurtures and further illuminates my Truth, my purpose, and my identity. Purpose cuts through steel.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear many hats. As an actor, I have a few small co-stars, some Lifetime feature films, and an array of commercials. As a director, I’ve created seven short films. All of them are wildly different but stylized and are in between arbitrary arthouse and surrealist narrative.
I am also a visual artist. I enjoy painting, digital art, poster design, and sound design. My latest short film saw all writing, directing, editing, and even musical score done by yours truly. It’s like creating an 1/8th of a baby. That’s the only “baby” I am cut out for. I’ll say less here and just let the work speak for itself.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Honor your Truth, listen to your heart, and kill them with kindness.
