Check Out Elizabeth ‘MOONSCES’ Roman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Roman.

Elizabeth Roman

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Emotions can either drown or heal if one allows it. I allowed victory to manifest within mine.

A painter, poet, singer, model, and then some – a passionate woman, quite multifaceted: I’ve been doing the work behind all since 2019 under a pseudonym MOONSCES.

My name is Elizabeth “MOONS” Roman, born in Los Angeles, California — truly, within The California Hospital. (W. 1997) a Theodore Roosevelt High School graduate who attended CSUN and ELAC, a place where I fully discovered my gift of gab. I am not only first generation within a proud Mexican family but also the only child to a father incarcerated for a green flower, which is now loudly celebrated, and the eldest to a mother who had to adjust and embody both parental roles – a true lioness. Even when surrounded by tough women in my household and men with vices, somehow my sensitive nature figured how to survive: inner child.

Raised within Pico Union and Boyle Heights, got taste for it ALL – the joy, the pain – The growth. Against all odds, I bloomed within the dirtiest waters – place in where Word, can bring harm or unity, depending on where you stand on. Color and Sound is what I relied on, of course.

What started off as music in 2019 turned into solo therapy between a blank canvas and my diary of 2022, containing words that cut so deep my voice went numb. I fought, crumbled, and re-planted myself back to me: a gentlewoman. A self-taught painter: analog girl in the digital world. Proceeding to master the acrylic and color pencil medium whose curiosity executed within May of 2023: I developed – designed, and published my own website, MOONSCES1940.com, turned business owner with my first drop of stickers, grinders, and lighters, which sold out at start of 2024, the year of a painter’s bloom.

March 15th, 2024, not only being my birthday but being a part of my first art show exhibition in Espacio 1839, located in the heart of Boyle Heights. Doing the imaginable; mujer que pregunta, mujer que sabe! Take it from me, coming from a girl who learned English in the fourth grade. I am here for that who is willing to trade the old for the new, if earth were to hand you a blank canvas how would you paint it?

I’ve been developing this healing art for quite some time now: Timeless rebel with a cause, with hope to inspire another to do what makes one feel absolute – free!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not always been smooth, there is lessons that come along the way, especially when being the eldest daughter – only child for 16 years, one doesn’t solely witness but in fact goes through battles when raised by a single parent. I watched my mother try with all her might till score: the job, her license, our first apartment, her first hooptie, a man who accepts her for who she is and bring life to a little sister who spent her first 4 years of life within hospital walls; the reason to give life my all. Having a loved one with their life at risk willing to go through surgery after surgery for a healthy living will sure have you appreciating each and every breath of your own.

I battled with self-harm for years – started at the young age of 8, I let go of all the past pain, negative talk after a prayer made next to my sisters’ hospital bed within Children’s Hospital that late 2018, midnight hour. The courage to live my own with a fiery passion in exchange for my then 4-year-old little sisters restored strength – health: a prayer granted.

While in college, I also decided to work 2 jobs: 4 am in a coffee shop, by 12pm, I was fighting sleep in classes, and late at night, I was at the front desk at the US Bank tower. I wanted to save for my creative interests. I looked up to my mother – a woman who nobody can tell nor take anything from, earning her own with grace – being the cherry on top, a powerful trait she embedded within me.

“All I do, try to represent life” – quoted on my Instagram bio, what I post is proof of that. If you weren’t blessed to learn about loss, then you’ll never be able to comprehend what I mean.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught painter, more so – a painter, poet, singer, model, etc. – a passionate woman, quite multifaceted: I’ve been shining light to all since 2019 under a pseudonym MOONSCES.

The “etc.”, within that first statement is what sets me apart from many, I don’t box who I am nor my passions, my curious nature always leads me to a higher version of self. I don’t take none of my gifts for granted, and patience has been my greatest ally. I am not a victim of time – what my heart and mind bring to manifest in the physical realm is as raw and true as these words, tears, grief, and joy.

My first two paintings named “Below the Heavens” 2022 and “Breath from Another” 2024, from my acrylic Art series, Heaven sights a Calla Lily in Bloom, are both up for exhibition in the city that witnessed the fight of a then seed, planted firm into this earth to become the woman I now come to be – limitless and timeless. It took 2 years for my first painting to score its first art show, and such patience granted my second released painting to go up along that wall with 20 other wonderful Latina artist and poets for the “Eres Poderosa” art exhibit & caminarte – I will eternally be grateful for the opportunity to showcase within Espacio 1839 for a whole month. I believe this is what I am most proud of currently speaking, but by the time this interview is released, I will have another accomplishment to add to the list.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for that who is just getting started – recognizing their power would be to shut all negative beliefs; anything you desire could be yours, and when greeted with what you have been manifesting for, do prepare to put the work in on what it comes with: many fail to mention that part so I won’t – being disciplined is key.

Highs and lows are a requirement when experiencing life, you don’t win all the time but to dwell in loss is a choice. Roll the dice, again and again – until score, big or small – celebrate yourself for the bravery you are willing to bring with your unique existence – addition to this earth.
