Check Out Edsger’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edsger.

Edsger, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became fascinated by photography as a teenager. At the time this of course meant manual film cameras, and lots of time spent in dark rooms. I loved the transition to digital cameras and all the new capabilities we have today to create truly magnificent images. I built my studio here in LA and try to use the highest quality gear, while still seeking beauty in simplicity. Every sitter is different and expresses beauty in different ways. I see my job as a photographer just to be ready with my camera for those magical moments that always happen during a shoot.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To pursue art is always a struggle, and perhaps it has to be this way. You have to be really motivated and passionate about your work to make it. There is a lot of competition especially in LA, and many of the top photographers are really good. To stand out among them is a goal that inspires me. Truly, if you love what you do, it does not matter what obstacles life puts in your way: you’ll find a way around them.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What do I try to achieve in a good headshot or fashion photo? In every shoot I try to make that direct connection with the viewer and convey that feeling that you know the model or feel what they are feeling. I sometimes call my headshots “Zen portraits,” because I try to convey a sense of stillness and calm contemplation. I often focus on the eyes, sometimes while softly blurring out the rest of the image by using a very small aperture and a minimal amount of light. I’m very fortunate that the models I work with very quickly understand the look that I’m after and work with me to achieve it.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Of course, success cannot be measured in fame or in material things. No one pursues art to become famous or rich. I have a successful day if I’m able to create a great new image that otherwise would never have existed. Perhaps that feeling of success is the confidence that you can do this again and again, and never get bored. And yes, it is also wonderful if more people fall in love with the results. My dream is to one day have an exhibit of my work where I can display my portraits as wall-size prints, super large. Now that would be success to me.
