Check Out Dwayne Gittens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwayne Gittens.

Hi Dwayne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started out in music as a Hip-Hop artist and through various connections and circumstances made the transition into the media field as an on-air personality, content creator, host, and staff writer for the pop culture website, Popdust.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The transition was pretty seamless but not what I would call “smooth” or easy. It required me to deal with people and personalities in a different capacity than what I was used to as an artist.

I had to learn an extended level of patience when communicating with publicists and managers while keeping the artist in mind. Once I was able to find that balance it became easier.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a Hip Hop artist for a large part of my life. But, I felt like I truly found myself as a creative doing what I’ve done in the media space. I feel like I gained a lot of my following from the latter in the last few years and I’m especially proud of that.

I’m known for having engaging conversations with artists from any genre of music. I’ve been told that my interviews feel more like well-crafted chats with a familiar friend than your normal artist/host interactions. I feel like being an artist myself with an eclectic ear is what sets me apart from other interviewers.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Do your research! I mean that in a literal and figurative sense. Don’t be afraid to ask questions no matter how ridiculous they may appear to others. The more information you have the more of an asset you’ll become to yourself and others.

If there was one thing I wish I knew start out, it would probably be that people will gravitate to you naturally if you just be yourself. During my music career, I was told time and time again how I should look and act and it lead to many missteps. Once I started to drown out the bad advice and started to be true to myself that’s when things opportunities opened up for me.
