Check Out Duel RIS’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Duel RIS.

Duel RIS

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Grew up around art my whole life. My mother was an oil painter and art teacher. As a kid, I got into graffiti and got into a lot of trouble. Tried to do something productive by taking art classes in college, which didn’t really work out. Eventually joined the US Marines. During my time in, I got back into art and began painting. I drew and painted things that interested me through the countries I visited. I incorporated and combined cultural styles to represent unity or to promote peace. When I retired, I brought that art to the streets.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey as an artist is never really easy depending on what you are trying to do. As far as putting it out in public, it hasn’t been much of a problem. Getting commissioned to do murals, paid for your work, or into galleries is another thing. That seems to be a bit more challenging.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I still do graffiti. As far as my work I focus more on cubism and calligraffiti. I do street installations and wheat paste. I also do concrete sculptures. I am most proud that didn’t get any real formal training and my art is created without references and on the spot. No two pieces will ever be the same.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
LA is a great place to showcase your art publicly but sometimes the challenge is keeping the real estate. Other street artists or graffiti artists may go over your work. But that can be any city.
