Today we’d like to introduce you to DJWaliGz Wali Goins.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
DJWaliGz (Wali Goins) grew up in Philly, a city with deep music roots. I’ve been around music my whole life, growing up with a very soulful soundtrack always on blast. I officially began spinning in college, supplying dance vibes for local promoters and colleges. I always had a good ear for the hits and understood the music that made people want to dance. Originally spinning Hip Hop/RnB/EDM and everything in-between.
I moved out to LA from Philly about 8 years ago to scratch a different creative itch in a life behind the scenes in Film and Television. I’ve worked in Post Production for some well-known shows and cable series like Dancing With The Stars, and A Black Lady Sketch Show. That has set me up to explore the bridge between both Music and Film. Looking forward to bringing my audible flavor to the screen soon.
I’ve always played and listened to international music but when Afrobeats broke through, I gravitated to it like none other. That led me down the rabbit hole of finding another emerging and popular African music genre; Amapiano. It’s a beautiful, melodic and positive energy out of South Africa. I found those vibes and now I want to spread them here as far and wide as I can.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a creative in LA is never a smooth road. Trying to find your tribe can be an obstacle but there are a lot of good people out here and those willing to help you get to the next level.
My only advice is to stay authentic, welcome collaboration, and curate positive energy around you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
You can find me at Various Venues across Hollywood and LA. Made my international debut in Tulum and Playa Del Carmen earlier this year and plan on more international dates in the future. The vibes are universal!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Someone recently asked me how long I’ve been DJing and I wanted to reference my first party in college where I dropped ‘Shake it Fast by Mystikal” and everybody went bananas! But then I dug back and I remember Friday’s as a kid I would rush to setup up my radio w/ cassette decks so I could record the latest hits and create my own mixtapes. I loved putting together great music as a kid and that still resonates today,
