Check Out Diego Godoy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Godoy.

Hi Diego, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started getting involved in art since I was very little; by the time I was three years old, my mom had to carry colored pencils and paper for me instead of toys, and by the time I was six, my grandma was already teaching me how to work with watercolor and oil paints

When I was a teenager, I discovered my passion for beauty and noticed how it blended all of my interests and a result I decided to pursue a career in Makeup Artistry. One of my aunts in Mexico, Lilian Enciso was my first beauty teacher back in 2018 while I was still in high school, and after graduating, I applied for a program at Makeup Designory in their LA Campus, which I was able to attend in 2021 and graduated from in 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Obstacles are part of every journey of course. Starting with choosing a career as a makeup artist, which is highly criticized for being considered superficial since it belongs to a branch within aesthetics, fashion or entertainment; and also for being a profession within the arts therefore not seen as a real or serious job.

Being a foreigner wasn’t an easy thing either. Even though I am very privileged to have people around me for support, and family that welcomed me into their home when I first moved to Los Angeles (shout-out to my tíos Jose and Yolanda!), it was hard to move out to one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a makeup artist, certified in different areas and techniques such as beauty, men’s grooming, bridal, hairstyling and SFX.

My work can go from the cleanest most natural-looking makeup to a heavy drag queen glam to a horrific monster transformation. I am confident I’m saying that I’m a really versatile artist.

Apart from my profession, art takes a role in my life in many ways, I am always creating something, be it drawing, painting, crafting or making props and accessories for my projects

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I think one of my favorite things about LA is how it’s the city most of us came to achieve our dreams; therefore, it’s filled with diversity and hard workers. What I like the least is probably the cost, not only cause it was my main worry when I first moved here as a student, but because I feel like many other problems derive from it.
