Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Jones.
Daniel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Honestly, it starts with me as a law student years ago who fully thought I’d be a lawyer. I always {knew that I} loved fashion, but had absolutely no clue what a stylist was or did, let alone how to become one. Then one day, I decided to reach out to friends who worked in PR and claimed they were assisting some stylists. They got me connected with some up-and-coming stylists and I interned for a few of them. Despite the work I did which entailed picking up mad bags all around the city, riding the subway with 5-7 large duffles or large garment bags, and dropping them off at various locations, I wasn’t really learning a damn thing at all from them, which was very unfortunate. Then one of my frat brothers connected me with Jason Rembert, and I’m forever indebted to him – thank you Brother McIntosh. Jason and I met for lunch a few weeks later and chopped it up for hours. Jason said he would contact me and about 3-4 months later, he did, and my life legitimately changed from that day on. I learned a hell of a lot from that man and he gave me the opportunity to learn, grow, and gain knowledge about the business and the industry. I got to be on set with many different clients, travel the world, and watch him do great work. Seeing him do this work, I knew this was what I wanted to do, and {years later} BOOM, here we are. DRJSPOKESTYLE LLC arrived, hahaha.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell no, it was not easy, but that’s also the great part of the journey. I’m humbled by the challenges and experiences. I love the journey because it helped me learn all the ins and outs of this game, including the little things people don’t get to see or think of. Even at this point in my career, I’m still learning daily about this fashion game.
Some of the struggles, I think, are finding someone, or people, to really believe in you and who will even give you the chance to assist and learn the business side of the styling industry. Then, just doing the behind-the-scenes things that people don’t see you do by yourself, like traveling with 10 duffle bags, the endless cold-calling and DMing every person you can think of to get work, like publicists, managers, athletes, and artists, etc. Then, another struggle is actually getting hired or solidifying a client. The pandemic was insanely hard. I went from being booked weekly to not hearing a word for months, and not knowing when I’d get that next booking, or what’s taking so long for my invoices to clear. There were so many challenges, I could go on and on, but we’ll save that for my Oprah interview, hahahaha.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a celebrity image curator who specializes in menswear (but not opposed to womenswear at all). Trust, I can do it all.
What am I most proud of?
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve hit that mark yet. I’ve had some really wonderful moments and have done a ton of work, but I am still waiting on that special moment. Off the top of my head, if I am proud of anything, it’s that outside the workplace, I’m able to make everyone around me happy and joyful. My energy is contagious.I’m really fun and all about having fun with everyone no matter what’s going on.
What sets me apart from others?
That’s a great question and a tough one. Honestly, my energy. You have to be around me in person to get it. I think most of my friends, or even people I’ve only met and don’t know that well, will tell you that. I’m just DJ, and my energy, warmth, and spirit overall are a sight to behold and to be a part of. So come kick it with me!
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Honestly making sure my family is good and all my people are winning, and mentally doing great as well.
Why?
Because there is so much shit going on in this world and there’s nothing like great family and friends by your side, with everyone winning and leveling up on all facets of life.
