Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Kristina.
Hi Dani, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been writing music since I was five years old, ever since I became interested in storytelling. I’m very inspired by the human experience, specifically the nuances of morality, and so as I grew older, I used writing as a way to make sense of hard decisions I had to make. Music then became a way for me to make sense of the world around me, and I’ve been creating ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most difficult thing for me as an artist has been redefining my idea of success. In this age of social media and insights—with all these statistics at our fingertips—I found that I got really caught up in the numbers. I would constantly be measuring up my progress to where I thought I should be and it became difficult for me to focus on what was most important the music. Recently, I’ve learned to redefine my progress and success, deciding that for me, it looks like consistent expression through my art.
I’ve also faced a lot of struggles in terms of vulnerability in my music, and it’s taken me a while to get comfortable sharing personal details of my life with people who listen to my music. While I grew up being a storyteller, I found it difficult to become comfortable telling my own stories and having them shared publicly.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create music that isn’t really tied to a genre, rather, it’s an extension of me and the different seasons of my life. I find that the thing that ties together most of my music is its thematic content exploring the nuances of relationships, heartbreak, and growing up. I’m really proud of myself for not limiting myself to one singular genre because I found that when I first started creating in the industry, many people told me that I‘d only be successful if I kept my music genres consistent. While I agree that that may work for some artists, I think what sets me apart from other artists is my decision to craft each song as a standalone project, making the thing that is familiar in all my songs me.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My favorite thing about the city is definitely the landscape. I love the beautiful scenery around and just the busyness of it all. Just taking a stroll by the beach and seeing all the tourists, locals, and creative people over there… It really gets me thinking about each of their individual stories and what initially drove them to move to the city.
I think my least favorite thing is the traffic! Honestly, everything can be fixed by an iced coffee and a good song on the radio, but the traffic really can put a cramp in your day.
