Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Little.
Hi Colton, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Like many actors, I got my first exposure to the arts through public school programs. I had an amazing music teacher named Mrs. Kornfeld who picked me out of music class in second grade and encouraged me to pursue singing. This began my obsession with the arts and I honestly don’t know if I would be where I’m at today without that encouragement. After pursuing music whole-heartedly until college, I decided to switch gears when I got the opportunity to be a performer at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I performed in shows and parades which eventually led to me getting my first AFTRA credit for a scripted commercial spot. I felt like that was the universe telling me to follow that path, so I poured myself into on-screen acting. I began training, learning, and preparing for a move to Los Angeles to pursue acting as a career.
Now, nearly a decade in, I’m getting some amazing opportunities with a recent recurring storyline on the iconic Days of Our Lives, as well as a Hallmark holiday feature coming out this Fall. Looking back at the journey, I truly believe I needed all the pitfalls and little wins in order to become the actor and human that I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finances…need I say more? Every actor/artist/performer can agree, I’m sure. There are a thousand acting classes out there but nothing that prepares you to work 3-4 jobs while trying to squeeze in auditions, training, and a social life. And then, if you get the job, you’re expected to drop everything in your day-to-day life to go be on set the following week. It’s a logistical nightmare at times and you’re constantly making tough decisions.
However, I began to learn that if I looked at all these different paths as opportunities to grow as a human, I would come out on the other side of this more fully formed and passionate about my craft. As an actor, even a trip to the grocery store is a chance to learn about human behavior. So, that’s what I began to do in my survival jobs. I became a curious observer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d say first and foremost I’m an actor. I love doing stage work, but I’ve found myself mostly in television and film here in Los Angeles. I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects ranging from beloved holiday films such as ION Channel’s A Wedding for Christmas to primetime dramas like 911 Lonestar and most recently on the daytime classic Days of Our Lives on Peacock. At this point in my career I’m enjoying exploring the breadth of roles that are available to me. Aside from acting, I’m always looking to grow as a creative. So, during the pandemic, I took the time to produce a short film called Phases which can now be found on Youtube. It was a challenge for myself to see if I could tell an intriguing story with limited time and resources. The short went on to garner laurels and recognition from multiple festivals and sparked some great online conversations in the LGBTQ+ space. Additionally, it bonded me with some amazing collaborators and opened up a new world of creative connections for me.
What’s next?
Currently, I’m enjoying the ride of being part of Days of Our Lives! The team there is so supportive and hardworking. My character, Andrew Donovan is a secret agent which is a blast to play. Additionally, with the way soaps film, every work day is like an acting bootcamp! You get 1-2 takes to get it right and you can’t leave anything on the floor (metaphorically). It is an exercise in professionalism and creativity. After years of hard work, I’m realizing it’s important to appreciate and reflect on this beautiful opportunity in front of me. Outside of that, I’m writing two features, both in the horror space. I am also finishing a children’s book which I am extremely excited about! It deals with themes of perseverance and coping with rejection. The story and characters are very special to me.
