Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Leon.
Hi Cindy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Beautiful Boards was started by making boards for friends and family. Shortly after my cousin encouraged me to make an IG account with the hope of it becoming a business. The first week of posting I had 9 orders! I was in over my head trying to figure out where to purchase what. I was so new to this that I barely made any money since I over-purchased product. Little by little I learned pricing. I learned what worked for my business and most importantly, I learned what aesthetic was true to me and my brand.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a business is definitely difficult, especially when it’s in the food industry. So many things make you doubt yourself because there’s so many “like you” out there. That changes when you change your way of thinking. I knew there were things that set me apart. My boards looked different than the rest, so I bet on myself, and I feel like that has given me the opportunity to grow and share my love of food with others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in grazing tables, boards, and other single-serve appetizers. We handcraft grazing tables for any and all special events. Looking back at where I started only making boards to now being booked every weekend for tables has been my biggest accomplishment. Knowing that strangers like and trust my work is something so special that I never thought would happen when I started 3 years ago.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking when starting a business is very important. When I first started, I invested the little money I had to purchase different packaging for my business with the fear of “what if it doesn’t work out” luckily people believed in me, and it worked out. Till this date I have a lot of packaging that I first bought, sitting in storage but I’m so glad I took that risk.
