Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciara White-Sparks.
Hi Ciara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My path to the media and communications field was unconventional. While I unknowingly possessed a passion for storytelling and writing throughout my youth, I never envisioned forging a career in these areas. Initially, I pursued a degree in Criminal Justice with the intention of becoming a prominent figure in politics. However, my first sociology course led me to recognize that law and politics were not where my strengths and interests lay. After a brief period of indecision, I discovered the field of journalism and communications, a profession I had never previously considered due to the lack of exposure within my family and social circle. Following a tour of the Scripps School of Journalism and Communications, I became firmly committed to pursuing this path and declared journalism as my major. During my academic journey, I actively participated in various journalism clubs while diligently building my media presence. Through unwavering dedication, continuous networking, and a thirst for knowledge, I gained valuable experiences that significantly shaped my career trajectory.
Upon graduation, I secured a fulfilling position as an on-air news reporter and multimedia journalist for local news, covering diverse stories across the seven cities of Norfolk, Virginia. After eleven months, I transitioned to explore a career in public relations and multicultural publicity, leading me to my current agency in Los Angeles, California. Here, I have the privilege of contributing to press visibility for Black and Latinx audiences by amplifying impactful and powerful narratives across campaigns for Disney Branded Television, Tubi, Sony Pictures, Amazon Studios, Universal Pictures, and numerous other clients.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My transition to Entertainment Public Relations after graduating involved a steep learning curve, and I continue to encounter new challenges as I navigate this dynamic field. One of the most significant challenges I face is navigating cultural nuances, particularly when surrounded by accomplished individuals who have made a significant impact on the industry. While this can initially lead to feelings of self-doubt, I am fortunate to have the guidance and support of inspiring mentors who recognize and elevate the value of my contributions. Embracing the constant learning opportunities presented by these challenges aligns with my personal philosophy of transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth. I am dedicated to using these experiences to fuel my knowledge and development, solidifying my position as a force within the media landscape.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I thrive as a PR Comms and Publicity Coordinator in the Entertainment PR team at a Multicultural Agency. My role seamlessly blends administrative tasks with strategic media research and communication. I actively engage with journalists, pitching captivating features and reviews for upcoming film and television projects. My expertise lies in amplifying Black press visibility, leveraging my former journalist experience to champion press opportunities for underrepresented voices and projects often overlooked by mainstream media.
Beyond my agency work, I’m passionate about empowering the next generation of storytellers. Through my independent venture, CWS Media Consulting, I mentor micro-influencers and content creators, guiding them in building thriving social media presences and establishing personal brands that pave the way for future monetization.
When I am not pitching or crafting campaigns, I maintain my connection to the media world through freelance writing and event hosting, continuing to identify as a Media Personality. My greatest reward comes from witnessing press hits and campaigns culminate in successful release weeks. Contributing to projects that resonate with audiences and deliver impactful messaging beyond individual stories fuels my passion for the dynamic field of public relations.
What truly distinguishes me is my ability to humanize narratives and engage audiences through meaningful content and media. I believe storytelling is a powerful gift, and I possess a unique talent for crafting authentic stories and captivating concepts that resonate with diverse audiences and demographics.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
From a young age, I actively participated in various activities, demonstrating a strong work ethic and diverse interests. My involvement spanned dance recitals, competitions, school clubs, religious commitments, and sports, showcasing my ability to manage a busy schedule. My personality has always been characterized by enthusiasm and positive energy. While maintaining an air of humility, I distinguished myself through bold and creative fashion choices and makeup styles, reflecting my desire to be unique and stand out from the crowd. My passion for storytelling and communication was nurtured by a love for reading and writing, ultimately leading me to pursue a rewarding career in journalism. Additionally, a strong sense of community service motivated my participation in pageantry during my youth. As I continue my personal and professional growth, I am committed to the principle of empowering others and fostering a sense of belonging in my community. I continue to walk in the path that God has designed for and be someone who made everybody feel like somebody!
