Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheng Qian.
Hi Cheng, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was a dancer before I came to the US, I learned dancing for almost fifteen years. I represented China and attended Blackpool dance festival, which is the most famous ballroom dance festival in the world; with my team. We were the double Champions for formation Ballroom dance and Latin dance. Sadly, after I achieved one of my dreams, I had to get surgery for my knee. My doctor told me I was unable to dance anymore. That was a really tough time for me, and it was hard to make a decision of what I wanted to do in the future. My family has been a huge support for me. I began my career working for my family’s company – China Red Sun Entertainment, a well-known Chinese entertainment company. This experience gave my great knowledge and helped me to build strong relationships that will hopefully serve me well in future endeavors at a young age. I eventually chose to come to the US to pursue my filmmaking dream.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not. Language was the first issue, I was unable to talk smoothly with native speakers for the first year I got here. I was even afraid of talking English to strangers. You have to push yourself out of your comfort zone. After I met some friends, I started joining the social network events at the school for a good connection with more filmmakers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a film producer and director. Creativity is my goal as a filmmaker. I’ve always been in love with horror movies since I was a little girl. As a director, I’ve made many horror films now, and most of my previous projects are based on the Japanese horror style. The atmosphere is simple and more quiet than Hollywood horror movies. I’m preparing for my first fast-paced horror movie named “The Lucky House.” As a producer, One of my films named “Jasmine” got into a few festivals, including LAHFF for best Narrative short(official selected) and Rome independent Prisma awards for best short film(Semi-Finalist).
What matters most to you? Why?
My family and myself. Without the support from my family, I would never have a chance to be here and pursue my dream.
