Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea B.
Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a custom crochet apparel designer that originated out of the South-side of Chicago, IL. As a recent graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I earned her B.F.A in surface design and textiles with a minor in fashion design. My passion for art began at a young age. However, it was not until attending SCAD that I discovered my true passion for fiber arts. This is where I combined my tactile skills with my illustrative qualities to create unique works of art.
In 2017, I began my own studio practice, Chelsea B Creations (now known as the House of Chelsea B LLC), where I focus on combining streetwear fashion and the skill of crochet.
Most recently, my worked has adorned rap artists ,such as, Flo Milli in Refinery Magazine’s January 2021 feature, the up and coming rap artist Yung Baby Tate in the “I AM” music March 2021, and singer Lucky Daye in his new music video “Over” this September 2021.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A lot of the challenges that I have faced within my career have definitely been “Imposter syndrome”. I’m always so hard on myself, and that has a lot to do with me not feeling good enough and truly discovering my own uniqueness within this industry. Especially being from the south side of Chicago, there is a certain level of grit, hustle, grind, and thick skin that you have to develop. But I’m grateful for the growing pains because they have made me the entrepreneur I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a custom crochet apparel designer. Many people know me most for my crochet puffers and vests and my very much vibrant color palette. I believe what sets me apart from other designers and more specifically other crochet designers/artists is the innovative ideas that I bring to the art of crochet. When I began crocheting, I knew that I wanted to push the boundaries and really shift the norm of what one has seen done with crochet. I believe that now people can imagine and aspire to have crochet designs in different lanes, from avant-garde to being integrated into streetwear fashion. One of the most proudest moments of my career has definitely been seeing my work grace New York City’s Times Square. I am so grateful for that moment and that opportunity.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When it comes to mentors, make sure that person is not always a “yes man”. You want someone who is honest and is willing to hold you accountable to completing your goals. Majority of my mentors are in the field of fashion but I believe that it allows them to be as honest and un biased with me. Majority of the advice that I’ve received from them, has definitely been geared trusting my own vision and I am a greater artist because of it.
