Today we’d like to introduce you to Char Gray.
Hi Char, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for fashion began the moment I was able to dress myself. With a true fashionista as my mother, I grew up watching her effortlessly express herself through style, and she gave me the freedom to do the same. That early encouragement sparked something in me—an unshakable passion for creativity, individuality, and the power of personal expression.
As I grew older, that spark evolved. Working as a personal shopper at Nordstrom opened my eyes to the many avenues within the fashion industry. I immersed myself in styling and modeling, yet I felt a deeper calling. I didn’t just want to wear or curate beautiful pieces—I wanted to create them.
In 2018, I bought my first sewing machine, and everything changed. I taught myself how to sew through countless hours of practice and YouTube tutorials, and in the process, I found my true voice as a designer. But I knew my purpose stretched beyond clothing alone. I wanted to build something that not only dressed people, but empowered them—something they could carry in their lives, not just in their closets.
That vision became Law of Theory. A brand born from self-expression, self-discovery, and the belief that fashion can be both beautiful and deeply meaningful. Every piece is designed with intention, created not just to be worn, but to inspire confidence, connection, and a sense of personal legacy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has not been easy—professionally or personally. Building this brand as a one-woman team has come with its share of challenges. I’ve had to balance a full-time career while managing every aspect of my business, often juggling roles that would normally belong to an entire team. Wearing so many hats while still showing up for real life has tested my resilience in ways I never expected.
The design process itself is deeply personal and incredibly demanding. Every garment is handcrafted by me—custom, intentional, and made with patience and precision. It takes time, energy, and emotional investment. There have been moments of frustration, exhaustion, and uncertainty, but I’ve poured my literal blood, sweat, and tears into this brand. And despite the obstacles, my passion has never wavered.
Law of Theory is more than a business to me. It is the product of my perseverance, my creativity, and my belief that purpose-driven fashion can transform lives—starting with my own.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is rooted in intentional design, personal storytelling, and the belief that fashion should carry meaning—not just style. As the founder and designer of Law of Theory, I specialize in handcrafted, custom garments that blend modern silhouettes with emotional depth. Every piece I create is made by hand, from start to finish, allowing me to infuse authenticity, care, and purpose into every stitch.
I am known for designing with intention. My pieces are not mass-produced—they are created one by one, tailored to the person who will wear them, and built to last. I focus on thoughtful construction, elevated minimalism, and garments that express identity, confidence, and transformation. My clients often tell me that my work feels personal—and that’s exactly what I strive for.
What I am most proud of is the journey behind my brand. Law of Theory was born from my desire to give people more than clothing. I wanted to create pieces that inspire self-belief, emotional growth, and deeper connection. The brand reflects my own evolution—years of learning, pushing through challenges, balancing full-time work, and building this dream stitch by stitch.
What sets me apart is that I design with heart, not just skill. I’m self-taught, which means my creativity isn’t limited by traditional rules. I approach fashion through intuition, lived experience, and storytelling. Every garment carries a piece of my journey and serves as a reminder that fashion can be empowering—and even healing.
Law of Theory is more than a brand; it’s a testament to resilience, purpose, and the beauty of becoming.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building meaningful connections starts with being intentional about who you surround yourself with. I’ve learned that the best relationships happen when you show up authentically and lead with genuine curiosity—not with an agenda. I always remind myself that mentorship isn’t just about finding someone “above” me; it’s about connecting with people who inspire me, challenge me, and believe in my growth.
What has worked well for me is putting myself in the right rooms—industry events, creative workshops, fashion shows, and online communities where like-minded people gather. I make it a point to introduce myself, share what I’m working on, and stay open to learning from anyone I meet. Some of the best connections I’ve made came from simply being present and willing to start a conversation.
I also believe in the power of giving before asking. When you support others, offer value, or show genuine appreciation for their work, they naturally want to support you in return. Over time, those small interactions become real relationships—with mentors, peers, collaborators, and clients.
Most importantly, I’ve learned to trust timing. The right mentors arrive when you’re ready to grow. Stay open, stay curious, and stay courageous enough to put yourself out there.
