Check Out Catherine Kong’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Kong.

Hi Catherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am both a concept artist and student! My love for art sprouted ever since I was a child, and I was really lucky to know that art is the career path I want to strive for at an early age. I had a clear direction to aim towards, and I kept on refining my skill and crafts ever since elementary school. This awareness eventually led me to carve my own path in the creative industry as I entered high school, and upon graduation, I enrolled in art college without hesitation. Right now, I am currently a student at ArtCenter College of Design and at the same time, I am a freelancer working in the entertainment industry!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everyone’s path has its ups and downs, and there’s a saying that says the road to success never goes how you intend to. There have been many times where I wished things happened differently. When I was in high school, I made it an absolute dream to attend ArtCenter College of Design for college; It was like the Harvard of art to me and I had my eyes dead-set on their concept design department. I had spent months working on the entrance portfolio in hopes of getting in – only to receive a rejection letter. However, now looking back I am so ever glad that happened to me. After getting rejected, I took a term off and took classes from BrainStorm – an online trade school – and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I had so far. I don’t think I would be where I am today without taking those classes. Overall, the lesson was just to go with the flow and make the best out of the present moment.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a student at ArtCenter College of design, and at the same time I am also a concept artist working in the entertainment industry! I am currently based in Pasadena, California and I specialize in realistic environmental conceptual design and painting using a mixture of 2D and 3D tools. I am just starting my career in the concept art industry, so my proudest thing is knowing that I am even considered as marketable within the industry standards 🙂

What makes you happy?
Aside from art, I am a huge nature lover! I really enjoy getting away from society and just feeling the peacefulness of what nature offers. I love activities like hiking, running, and climbing, as it creates a perfect balance with my work/school life with my physical and mental health. Not to mention the scenery is always spectacular! I always take inspiration from the beautiful views and the natural landscapes; It fuels my motivation to create pieces that are just as gorgeous.
