Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Torres.
Hi Carlos, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Gardena back in the ‘80s and ‘90s and dreamed of dedicating my life to drawing the superheroes and fantasy artwork that I saw at the comic book store down the street. Originally, I thought the best way to maintain a life full of art would be to become an art teacher — until I learned how many years of school would be needed to achieve that.
When it comes to tattooing, I was mostly self-taught. I got my first kit through the mail and just worked on friends. My early years of tattooing were spent working in a couple of different tattoo shops around LA before building up my skills and portfolio at So. Cal Tattoo in San Pedro, CA.
These days, I would say that I am known for creating black and gray realism and surrealism work that you can recognize from across the room. When creating these projects, my process includes everything from hiring and photographing models to editing and eventually painting and/or tattooing each original art piece.
Since starting my journey as a tattooer, I have also opened up my own studio, The Raven and The Wolves. We opened up in October of 2017 and being able to surround myself with inspiring artists has been a dream come true.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been long and there have been bumps along the way. I would say the biggest challenge came when opening up my studio. We had to work very hard to get approved by the city and to build a dream studio.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a tattoo artist that specializes in black and grey realism and surrealism. I would say that I am most know for my filigree-inspired pieces.
