Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlee Tatum.

Carlee Tatum

Hi Carlee, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been doing wedding photography since 2017 and have had a passion for photography since my teen years. When COVID hit, and weddings were put on hold, I found myself with a lot more free time. That’s when I started exploring ceramics. With all this time to reflect, I began to realize the toll weddings were taking on me, both mentally and physically.

Towards the end of 2021, a friend of mine was considering opening a hair salon. I suggested having a small section within the salon to sell my ceramics and other items. Once I got a taste of creating and selling, I was completely hooked. By the end of 2022, I found my own small shop just down the street from the salon, and by March 2023, I was open for business!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating a new adventure always comes with its share of challenges. Upon receiving the keys to our new shop, we were met with an unexpected hurdle: mold lurking in the walls from previous rainstorms. This discovery meant diving into extensive construction and remodeling work. From installing new flooring to painting, cleaning, drywalling, and tackling electrical tasks, the to-do list seemed endless. Both emotionally and financially, my husband and I felt the strain.

Beyond the physical labor and financial strain, there’s also the persistent doubt that creeps into your mind. Is this endeavor truly worth it? What if all the time and money invested end up being for nothing? There’s the added pressure of hoping that the products we’re bringing in – not just my own creations but also those of other independent brands – resonate with our future customers. It’s a constant balancing act of optimism and pragmatism.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When it comes to hobbies, I’m all about exploring every avenue possible. That’s actually a big reason why I decided to open my cozy little shop – it’s my creative haven where I can indulge in all the things I love. While ceramics take the spotlight as my main craft, I also pour my heart into designing stickers, tote bags, t-shirts, and even woven beaded earrings. Oh, and let’s not forget about the mini print vending machine – it’s a quirky touch that adds character to the space.

Illustration is another passion of mine, and I’m thrilled that I can weave it into both the shop’s ambiance and my ceramic designs. It’s incredible to see how all these different interests come together under one roof, allowing me to express myself in so many unique ways.

I would say what sets me apart is my background in photography. While other shop owners might need to outsource tasks like design work, product photography, and social media management, I’ve got it all covered in-house. Thanks to my photography skills, I can handle everything under one roof. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about bringing a cohesive vision to life and offering a personalized touch that truly resonates with my customers. Although I’ve taken a significant step back from wedding photography, I’m deeply thankful for the valuable knowledge and experience it has provided me along the journey.

What do you think about happiness?
My family is the cornerstone of my happiness. While running the shop and indulging in creative endeavors fills my creative cup, it’s my husband and son who truly complete me. They’re the first ones I eagerly share my work with, and their unwavering support and encouragement lift me up even during my toughest moments. They’re my constant cheerleaders, and I couldn’t imagine navigating this journey without them by my side.
