Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Wakefield.
Hi Candace, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in church, singing in the choir and praise worship team. So many musicians in church play for major artists, this is where I got my start. Marcus Hodge, an amazing musician I met in church, started to book me for shows and that’s how I started singing for Omarion and Marques Houston. Once I began singing for them, the calls kept coming and I went off to sing with Mila J, Kelly Price, Nicki Minaj, Ciara, Kendrick Lamar, Keyshia Cole, Babyface, Robin Thicke and the list goes on. I’ve Always had a passion to be an artist and Songwriter. I grew these passions along the way and am living in that today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy, I faced many challenges along the way in this industry from being told I need to dress more sexy or being told I need to dumb down my sound for the consumer. I’m so grateful that I did neither and stayed faithful and consistent with who I really am. It truly is paying off. My character has been tested and tried also in this industry but I never let it change who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist, vocal producer, a vocal coach, designer and Songwriter. I love to share my gift with others. I love to help develop artists as well to help them understand or create and develop a sound. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t give in to what other people want me to do. I live my truth through my music. I have no issues telling the truth and connecting with my audience through my experiences. I am unapologetically me.
How do you think about luck?
Luck? I don’t know if I truly believe in luck, I believe in blessings and good karma, the universe has been good to me. The industry is for sure up and down and I’ve had many ups and downs In this industry, but only the strong survive. At the end of the day, I have lived out my dreams and I still am.
