Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Safiya.
Hi Camille, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a solo artist in NYC and always had a vision of building a band. I moved to Oakland, California to pursue my dream and that is when the journey of building The Futurelics began. We’ve been through a lot as a band and the current band has been together for a little over three years. We move more like a tribe than a band. Over time I’ve built an Artist sanctuary where Artists are part of an eco-system that supports them as a holistic being rather than just extracting their Art and leaving the Artists to fend for themselves. Our Artist Sanctuary is called Planet Futurelic. In addition to supporting professional Artist development, we support Artists mentally, physically and emotionally.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a big band, the road has been rocky to keep all the moving pieces together. We’ve hand bandmates come and go but the current group has been together for three years. Some of the struggles we faced was when the music industry took an electronic turn, real musicians and instrumentalists were outcasted and made to feel like we were outdated. We heard a lot of “why don’t you scale back the band, automate some of the instruments and go on tour”. Many shows didn’t want to book such a large band because they considered it to be inconvenient based on their perception of the modern music model. We always knew we had something special so we held onto our integrity and continued to perfect our sound. Fast forward to 2021, the world is craving real music and live musicians more than ever before and The Futurelics are finally getting the love we’ve always deserved.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Songwriter, Musician and Painter. I create from a space of reflecting the world around me and transmuting energy I see throughout my world travels. I am known for the rawness and authenticity of my voice, my abstract paintings and my songwriting. I am most proud of building my band The Futurelics and our Artist sanctuary, Planet Futurelic. What sets me apart from others is that I prioritize integrity, loyalty and treating Creatives with the love and respect they deserve.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am an equestrian! I love to work with horses.
