Check Out Camilla Bartoli’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camilla Bartoli.

Hi Camilla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Italy and grew up between France, China, the USA, and the UK. This exposure to different cultures has continuously nurtured my understanding and curiosity for diversity. Considering movies a major bridge across different cultures and a window into a country’s heart, I have developed a strong passion for films and storytelling from an early age. I was drawn towards the way the rhythm of the cuts, the use of sounds, and music were all coming together to create different emotions. The more I was learning about filmmaking the more I noticed the impact that the editing process had on shaping the story and creating these emotions. I was blown away by the possibilities from the very moment I started shooting my own films, realizing that this was the ideal professional path for me.

After high school, I moved to the UK and graduated with a B.A. in Film, TV, and Digital Production from Royal Holloway University. During that time, I specialized in directing and producing, but I kept editing as a freelancer. I wanted to learn more about the different roles and gain a broader understanding of the filmmaking process. Once I graduated, I moved to LA to attend the AFI Conservatory and I recently received my MFA in Editing. I feel very fortunate because I was able to learn and collaborate with so many talented storytellers along the way. I also got the chance to learn from professionals, whose work I have always admired. I am glad to be in a city such as LA, where you are surrounded by so many creative people with very different backgrounds. LA is the city of story tellers.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always a few bumps along the way, but I believe that you learn the most from the challenges you face. It took a lot of hard work to get to where I am today. I am thankful for the support of my family, friends, and mentors who have helped me along this journey. I always felt supported to follow my dreams which gave me a lot of strength to face whatever came my way. Throughout my life, I have never lived in a country for more than four years. I constantly had to start over, make new connections, find new opportunities, and adapt to new cultures. The challenges I have encountered have taught me that new opportunities are not given but earned. Being so passionate about my craft and driven to improve every day, I am convinced I can keep growing as a filmmaker. And I am willing to earn the opportunities that lie ahead.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The past year has been very productive for me. I have been working on a variety of projects ranging from award-winning short films, web series, documentaries to indie feature films. My most recent credits include HALLELUJAH (2021, Short Film) which recently premiered at Sundance Film Festival 22’, KISSY AND THE SHARK (2021, Short Film) which will be premiering at the Santa Barbara Film Festival 22’, BLIPPI – SLIMETIME (2021, Kids Show) which you can find on Netflix, and KUSH: A BUBBLEGUM WESTERN (2021, Short Film) which screened at the Austin Film Festival 21’ and CAA Moebius Film Festival 21’.

I enjoy working on different genres with most of my experience being in narrative films, particularly drama and comedy. I am also interested in pursuing unscripted projects, such as documentaries, telling stories that are waiting to be told.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being aware of and grateful for what I have. I try to be conscious of the little things that can make a difference and the little gestures of people that can enrich my life. Paying attention to these details, I am able to recharge my batteries to face obstacles and grasp opportunities that lie ahead. My family and friends have been my continuous support throughout this journey. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the relationships I have forged along the way. Being able to cherish this journey is what makes me happy.
