Today we’d like to introduce you to Cami and Niki. They and their team shared their story with us below:
After Cami moved out to LA to join Niki, we wanted to work together in some way on a fun project that we could use as a creative outlet. One day at dinner, a friend of ours recommended we start a podcast together. It wasn’t really on our radar and definitely not something we had any experience in.
Nevertheless, we decided to go for it, and he connected us with an audio editor who helped us get everything started. We had zero followers, zero listeners, zero social media presence. When Double Teamed Podcast was born, the two of us were recording with one microphone on the floor of Cami’s bedroom, starting and stopping constantly because we weren’t always sure if we liked where the conversation was going. It took time, but we eventually learned how to improve production, how to grow our social media, how to garner more listeners, and how to have valuable conversations that our listeners could gain something from. We’re pretty proud of what we have accomplished in these last two years, and we can’t wait to keep the momentum going. During one of our recordings, we connected with Broke Girl Therapy, another sex-positive podcast here in LA. We struck an instant friendship that has now turned into two live shows, with two more scheduled for the remainder of 2023.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growth is not linear, and that has definitely applied to our journey with the podcast. We’ve had great months, we’ve had poor months – but in the end, they’re all beneficial months. The times we saw numbers decline, it forced us to try new ways of connecting or better ways of reaching a wider audience. It’s also challenged our relationship as twins. We’ve never been business partners before, and navigating that has come with new ways of communicating and problem-solving. We even have a joint therapist now! But overall, it’s been a fun road – even the tough moments were quickly eased with a recording where we got to laugh, share stories, and explore our minds.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our podcast covers non-monogamy, kink, and sexuality, and we’d like to think we’ve built a safe space where we can discuss all of those things with an open mind and without any judgment. Our listeners know we’re always game to dive into any topic, whether we have experience with it or not, and explore it further. We’ve usually taken an edutainment approach: we like to be both educational and entertaining. Our guests have included a wide range of experts in their respective fields, whether it be lube, Dominance & submission, cannabis, therapy, sexual wellness, you name it. But what I think our listeners love the most is our dynamic as twins. We always joke, Niki is the content and Cami is the comedic relief with the perfectly timed one-liners. In reality, we both have stories and experiences we contribute, but our relationship definitely seems to be something everyone enjoys being a part of.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Our biggest mentors have been other podcasters, editors, and producers in the sex podcast space, and we really can’t thank them enough for helping us make our podcast better. For anyone wanting to grow in any space, look to the people doing what you want to be doing and learn from them. Stay true to your craft and your voice, but find their best practices and see how you can apply them to your work or add your own spin to them.
