Today we’d like to introduce you to C. Craig Patterson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Writing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I wrote for magazines and radio, but in 2013 I got the chance to study filmmaking at Columbia University in New York and from there, I just never looked back. Making films — even tiny ones — taught me so much about who I was at that particular time; how I felt about a particular issue or what was my outlook on the world around me and how that changes over time. I just wound up swimming in the waters of cinema and I hope to never get out.
I went from making movies with seven or eight friends to making ones with a team of 300+. Both ways are phenomenal. Directing films is a beautiful way to spend your life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Any vocation where success is hinged on how others feel about your work is inherently dangerous for your psyche, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have grounded and kind souls in my circle who remind me that I’m an audience member too; meaning that if I like, someone else will.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a writer and director of special moments. Sometimes those moments are fantastical, some heartbreaking, some terrifying, and others inspiring, but all catch our characters at a pivotal time where their actions are needed more than anything. Hopefully, my specialty is doing right by those moments — and the teams of filmmakers who make those moments with me.
I guess that I’m most proud of finding a way to keep this dream moving forward.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up as a kid in the 7th Ward of New Orleans was an amazing experience for capturing memories. At the time, it seemed like every house on the block had a kid my age and between the time we got home from school and the street lights coming on, we were gods. We played in the street and behind the library endlessly. Two-hand touch football, hide-n-seek, ill-advised adventures, you name it — we did it. There wasn’t a bunch of money to go around, but we were all the Elon Musks and Bezos of happiness. There’s a little of that time in everything that I make.
