Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Allison
Brynn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Brynnie, and I’m originally a theatre kid from Michigan. Growing up my Mom worked in community theatre, and my Lola LOVED taking me to shows. I was and still am mesmerized by live theatre, and I studied Directing in school. I grew up listening to bluegrass, Carol King, Dolly Parton, and Hannah Montana. I’ve heard music in my head for as long as I can remember, and I was lucky enough to grow up around talented multi-hyphenate creatives, storytellers, musicians, theatremakers, nuns, and drag queens, who showed me from a young age I could do anything I set my mind to. When I was 15, I saved up all my babysitting money that year to record my original music at a studio a friend had recommended, which would eventually turn into my 2019 EP Meteor Showers. In 2020 I released another EP I made with college friends, Hopeless Romantic. I stand by both works completely and adore the vulnerability and nostalgia they bring when I play those songs live. I moved to LA in 2023, and I’ve fallen in love performing for this community as myself and not as a character onstage. I’m about to release my EP after being recognized as a Plaid Dog Recording Rising Artist and crowdfunding over $12,000 in 2024 to make the record of my dreams in Boston, MA. To say I feel like my dreams have come true this year would be an understatement.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly not. Resilience is key in this industry, and it’s about showing up every day even when you’re scared, exhausted, or unsure. I tell everybody I meet at my live shows: the first time I was onstage was as a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz in Kindergarten. At 24, I truly mean it when I say I get the same pit in my stomach before I walk into the spotlight as I did then. It’s about choosing to get up on that stage when the butterflies get bigger, release vulnerable music unafraid of who will hear, and away the fear of be seen trying. That’s been a big one this year. Being unafraid to be seen trying. It’s a daily choice and affirmation. Those who chose curiosity rather than fear don’t make the choice for the money. I’m so inspired by the people I meet, the music I hear, and the collaborators I work with, that I will choose them every time over imposter syndrome if it means making something I’m proud of.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an LA-based singer/songwriter but I wear my hometown heart on my sleeve. I miss Michigan every day, and only recently have I understood how you can hear that influence in my music. I’m inspired by the grandiosity of musical theatre, the duality of simple and complex in bluegrass music, the storytelling in folk music, and the greys we don’t always explore in a black and white world. My record is a tribute to redefining home, acknowledging your roots, and becoming the person you dreamed about in your childhood.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I grew up in a really small town in Michigan- less than 2,000 people by a lake. 30 kids in my graduating class. Everything about moving here has been a surprise and a culture shock, but one I was ready for. I have experienced so much free and public art, so many open mics, and met more people with more stories than I could have dreamed I would. I’m a massive Muppets fan, and got to go see Puppet Up! at the Henson Lot earlier this year. I love the South Bay. I love that I’m never too far from a hike or the open water. I love the people I meet and the dreams they chase the most, though. The dreams people have are the heartbeat of this town for me and part of the reason I moved here. Somebody told me once that transplants like me either leave or graduate from Los Angeles. I hope I graduate with high honors.
