Check Out Brittany Mccarthy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Mccarthy.

Hi Brittany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved to draw since I was a child. I loved Sunday comics and manga, so I would challenge myself to draw in as many styles as I could. As I grew up, I continued to take art classes, went to CSSSA in high school, and then graduated from CALARTS with a BFA in 2D Animation. Since then, I’ve been consistently working in animation on all types of shows, prime time, comedy, action, 2d, 3d, and preschool.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, my own mental health has been the biggest obstacle. It’s very easy in a business where you get told “no” all the time to feel like you’re not good enough or like you don’t deserve to be where you are, and that isn’t true. I know people who are extremely talented who constantly feel like they aren’t up to par.

Growing up, I really struggled with my own self-worth, and that continued as I entered the workforce after college. I think as artists, we need to realize that the “beat yourself up until you get better” mentality is really terrible. It’s very easy for people to take advantage of you when you don’t know you’re worth. Now that I’ve turned 30, I’m trying to really understand for myself and that my work is worth something and so are any suggestions I have.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Storyboard Artist in animation, currently at Warner Brothers. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to adapt to many different styles of shows, instead of just one type like just an action storyboard artist or just a comedy board artist. I like creating complex female characters in my personal work. I am most proud of the fact that I can be an example that this is a real career path for young adults because I came from a smaller city where I was frequently told that I wouldn’t be able to do this, so it’s important for young adults to know that they can do this as “a real job” as well.
