Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Sands.
Hi Brent, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Founded in Sacramento, Impound Comics is an independent comic book universe that has quickly grown from a local vision to a nationally recognized brand. At the center of the story is Anthony “Impound” Endsley, a former MMA fighter turned supernatural superhero—our flagship character whose journey mirrors the underdog grind of the brand itself. His saga launched a larger universe that now includes standout heroes like the regal and powerful Lady Monarch, and the high-octane, explosive anti-hero Blasted.
What began as a single comic concept has evolved into a 17-book deep universe with a dedicated fanbase, physical merchandise, and multimedia content. The Impound brand became even more grounded in its city when it opened a flagship store in DOCO (Downtown Commons Sacramento)—not just a comic shop, but a cultural hub merging comics, anime, and streetwear.
In 2023, Impound Comics hit a major milestone through a collaboration with PF Flyers and the Sacramento Kings—resulting in a custom sneaker and an exclusive comic book showcasing our original character “Flyer.” This partnership marked the first time a local comic book brand aligned with both an NBA franchise and a classic footwear brand, putting Impound at the intersection of sports, storytelling, and fashion.
Our social media presence has surged, drawing in fans worldwide who connect with our characters, stories, and behind-the-scenes grind. With each post, release, and community event, Impound proves that independent comics can build worlds just as rich—and often more relevant—than the industry giants.
From the streets of Sacramento to national collaborations, Impound Comics is more than a comic brand—it’s the future of indie storytelling.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building Impound Comics has never been easy—and we never expected it to be.
Like any independent business, one of our biggest ongoing challenges is maintaining cash flow. Creating a comic universe takes more than passion; it takes money, time, and consistency. From paying artists and printing books to producing merchandise and running a storefront, every dollar counts. And unlike mainstream publishers, we don’t have unlimited budgets or a safety net—we’re investing in ourselves every step of the way.
But the grind doesn’t stop at selling comic books. In order to keep the brand alive and growing, we’ve had to constantly think beyond the page. That means creating new events, exclusive drops, collaborations, and community experiences that excite fans and bring more eyes to the universe. We’re not just publishing stories—we’re building a culture.
The truth is, there’s no blueprint for building a modern indie comic company. We can’t follow in Marvel or DC’s footsteps because we’re navigating a completely different landscape—social media, direct-to-consumer sales, pop culture crossovers, and a generation that craves authenticity over legacy. That means we have to be creative all the time, adapting, experimenting, and pushing boundaries just to survive, let alone grow.
What keeps us going is the belief in our stories, our community, and the fact that we’re laying the foundation for something much bigger than ourselves. Every struggle is part of the process—and part of the story.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m Brent Trayce Sands — the writer and creator of Impound Comics.
Every character, every storyline comes directly from my imagination. As a lifelong fan of fiction, I’ve always written my own stories, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that I decided to turn that passion into something real. That’s when Impound was born.
From launching our first issue to opening a physical store within the first six months, the response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Being an indie creator already sets us apart — but combining that with a strong online presence and bold, original characters helped us carve out our own lane in the comic world.
Impound isn’t just a comic series — it’s a growing universe built with intention, energy, and creativity.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
