Check Out Bohan Yang’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bohan Yang.

Hi Bohan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Bohan Yang, but my friends usually call me Crystal.

I come from a very small city in northern China. When I was in high school, my mother sent me to a boarding school far from home. When I was faced with the new living environment and had difficulty adapting, I always watched movies quietly in my dormitory after school. Because I had no friends in the strange new environment, watching movies became the only thing I could do in my free time. Sharing the movies I watched recently also became the best way to open up the conversation whenever I met new friends.

Later on, I started a film club with my friends at school.

In addition to organizing monthly movie nights, we also started to try to make our own short films. At that time, we didn’t know anything about production design and shot design. We just stumbled around with a group of friends and used simple equipment to shoot the stories we wanted to tell.

So when I applied for college, I choose filmmaking as my major.

I first went to Savannah College of art and Design for my undergraduate. The school is located at Savannah, Georgia. It was a very small and quiet city with beautiful scenery. I met more like-minded friends, which gave me a good foundation of filmmaking. Through four years of undergraduate study, I became more aware of the path I wanted to take.

I chose to move to LA to continue study filmmaking. I chose to come to the American Film Institute to study producing. I feel very fortunate to have studied at top film schools in the world and to have met so many people here who have a dream and a passion. It also gave me a deeper understanding of what it takes to be a good producer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Filmmaking has never been an easy path. Maintaining the passion and enthusiasm for film I think is the hardest part. The encouragement of my friends around me always keeps me going and never give up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now, I am an LA-based producer.

Recently a project I produced named “A Quite Night in Monterey Park” premiered at the 44th Cairo International Film Festival (A category film festival). Also, this film has been selected by Rome, International Film Festival, Seattle Asian American Film Festival & Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival.
