Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Barnes.
Hi Audrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been singing and writing music for as long as I can remember. In 2020, I was a pre-law student at the University of Michigan when the pandemic hit. With all this newfound time at home, I began to spend even more time on music — learning music production and writing prolifically. Upon graduating from UM in the spring of 2021, I decided that it was now or never and made the move out to Los Angeles. My most recent project, Growing Pains, feels like the culmination of the last two years. Between the friends and collaborators I’ve met and the inspiration I’ve found in this city, Growing Pains feels like a time capsule of this period of my life and I hope other 20-somethings going through their own growing pains can relate and feel seen.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I struggled a lot with my mental health through this project. I think we songwriters tend to be the type to really deeply feel all of our emotions, and I don’t think this project would have been possible without the mental health struggles I went through, but I also found it to be a big challenge to complete all necessary arenas of the project — writing, recording, promotions, etc. — because of those same struggles.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter, probably most well-known for a challenge series I would do on social media, writing songs from 3 random words in 30 minutes or less. I’m very proud of the most recent project I put out. I have always thought of myself as a lyricist first and foremost, and I am very proud of the lyric choices in these songs — I hope people give them a close listen.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love LA. I grew up in Michigan and spent my whole life there until moving to LA in 2021, so I REALLY love the weather! I love the majesty of the mountains and the ocean, I love the people I have met out here, I love seeing blue skies almost every day, and I love the pace of life.
