Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Roberts.
Hi Ashley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
My name is Ashley, and my now-husband is in recovery from a drug addiction. It’s something that we have been experiencing and learning from for years, and while that whole topic is under-acknowledged in itself, the role of the partner is even more so.
I knew that he had issues with substance abuse when I met him, but even through the years of our relationship, my years of searching for guidance and given the fact that so many people struggle with these issues, I had very few places to go to find what I was looking for. I searched high and low and had difficulties finding resources at all, let alone one that was made from the perspective of someone like me. Of course, there are some, such as Nar-Anon and other program meetings, but to have a personal account with no rules on how to share is invaluable. So many people struggle as I have, and when I was in the thick of it, I would have valued a friend that could help show me how to thrive despite the circumstances, instead of living in fear. And that’s why I created my site www.ashleyspeaksup.com.
I want to be that friend and resource for others like I wish I had in my most difficult of times. I want to do what I can to start a conversation on these more quiet and hidden issues. I want people to understand more of what it is like to be someone in my shoes and to show that there is so much more at play than what outside perspectives can show.
And I want people to feel more comfortable to start their own healing, while also opening up to continue the conversations that help us all.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been challenges of course. I am looking forward to a time when I am able to help and be there for as many people as I can, but I am very thankful for the interactions that I have had with others like me so far.
There are always ways to improve, grow, and do as much as possible, and I am excited to see the work that I’m doing reach as wide an audience as I envision it to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have a blog and social media accounts that all revolve around showing how I grew through his addiction, and also how I continue to improve my life on every level even today. Recovery on any subject is an ever-changing, up-and-down journey, and one that never ends. I really enjoy this because I actually live it.
It’s something I personally lived through, and continue to do now. It’s not just something I learned about from an outside perspective, and I feel like having someone like that in your corner during your own struggles really helps you to realize your own ability to get through it. So often we hear doubts and are told that we should give up, even if it goes against how we truly feel. And I want to show others that it is possible to get to a place where you thrive, no matter how your outside life may look to those around you.
I’m very proud of the work that I have done so far on sharing my experiences, and even more so for the fact that I continue to do it even if it’s difficult to share. And I really hope people can see that for what it is as well.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I don’t have anything specific, but I will always say that you should always keep searching. We should always aim to learn more about ourselves and what is special to us every day, through whatever forms of media we enjoy the most.
Whether it’s to grow emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, or just to find peace and have some fun, there is always something out there at our fingertips ready to be found to help us along the way.
