Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Angmorter.
Hi Angel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had this itch to be an entrepreneur. From a young age, I watched my parents run their own business and assisted them when they needed. As a first generation raised in the U.S., and the eldest child of a Ghanian dad and Filipino mom, hard work has always been in my spirit. My dad was a chemist, and my mom was in finance. My dad started a cosmetics manufacturing business and my mom helped take care of the books. I enjoyed helping my family business. I was the front desk receptionist, to the order filler in the back. There were days we were in my parent’s office for hours at a time, and sometimes I wished I could just be like other kids and go home after school and play all day. Little did I know the lessons, the long days at the office, and the challenges they faced would help groom me into the businesswoman that I am today. I started Simple Wellness in 2020 during the peak of COVID-19. I was just laid off from my corporate job and needed a source of income to help take care of my little boy. I was in the midst of raising a son as a single mom, navigating a personal wellness journey, and trying to figure out the next opportunity to make sure my son and I were ok during a worldwide pandemic.
I was already on a wellness craze- eating better, juicing and finding all-natural ways of healing. Interestingly enough, a vast majority of folks were trying to find ways to prevent or suppress COVID symptoms. Sea moss was one of my first tries at selling Simple Wellness products. Sea moss is an all-natural supplement derived from the ocean, and I was taking it faithfully when I discovered its potent health benefits to combat daily mineral deficiencies and help with overall well-being. I made a small batch and posted it on my personal social media page. I sold out within 24 hours. After that, I was selling out weekly. I wanted to continue selling health products so I started researching more all-natural methods of healing that weren’t too complicated or too pricey. I wanted to create an addition to my product line that was simple. I started selling cold-pressed juices. I was already juicing for close friends and family 2 years prior so it was like I was already practicing for my next hit before I knew it. Whenever I made my sea moss deliveries, I gave samples of my juices and ginger shots. This was a great compliment to my business model. I was soon getting positive responses and started to produce juices and wellness shots daily and sold them as cleanse packs and bundles.
A year after the momentum of Simple Wellness began, I wanted to tap into another line of business. Almost like my passion line. I have always been curious about trying new haircare products for my son and I. We are both have curly hair with different textures. I was always in the local stores looking to try new things. Every time I was at the store, I was always asked about my hair or my son’s hair and the products we used. This struck another idea. I needed a haircare line. I wanted the hair care products to reflect my wellness journey but also be effective for different hair types. My dad unfortunately was diagnosed with dementia, so having a conversation with him as the brilliant chemist he was -was going to be hard. I really had to dig deep into my memories and remember some of the skills and ways my dad developed his business. I tapped into some old resources he used and methods of formulation. With some research and prayer, the first Simple Wellness hair care line came to life. I spent endless nights testing the products, coming up with the bottle design, and working with vendors to make sure the products were high quality. I developed a shampoo, conditioner, and hair serum suitable for all hair types. It is derived from natural ingredients and made with the intention to be an alternative to a lot of the chemical-infused products we buy at the stores.
2022 has been a blessing and growth opportunity for Simple Wellness. Since launching the brand, I have been able to do small collaborations with other brands, share wellness with brand ambassadors that represent total health goals, and incorporate my own wellness journey with indoor cycling and strength training. Simple Wellness branching partnering with local fitness studios, doing pop-ups, vendors at private events and continuing to sell through the e-commerce space.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a business has not been a smooth road. There were times where I faced challenges with supply chain delays, price of goods increasing and shipping delays.
As a mom, struggling to balance business and family time was a bit hard at times. I wanted to spend have time with my son, but I knew losing momentum meant losing opportunity to provide my son with a better life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Human Resource professional by day. I specialize in Talent Acquisition in the healthcare industry.
I am so proud of the industry that I am in. It is so rewarding to be a decision-maker and influencer that impacts health and wellness. I love networking and connection as a human first with my colleagues, peers, and associates. I am passionate about learning others and their interests and helping them navigate a fulfilling career or experience in the workplace.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Up until I discovered stationary cycling, I was not a fan of fitness or working out. I could eat healthy all day but had no interest in getting active. I built a love around cycling starting with a beach/ocean view class, then a hip hop and rhythmic ride studio in Rancho Cucamonga. When I realized how the feeling of moving my body affected mental clarity and physical health, I was hooked! I can’t go more than 2 days without some type of fitness class or exercise.
