Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Marcano.
Hi Al, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a 36-year-old nonbinary artist based in Joshua, California. I’ve been an artist since 2012 and have displayed internationally. I got my start in Los Angeles, I would say in 2017. I moved out here with a suitcase and my skateboard, literally. Back then, you could find me on 6th and Spring painting live throughout the night. I started to get noticed on the streets at first. Then I would move on to painting stuff for Bloomingdales getting into galleries and La Art show. Did design work for Father John Misty and have sold my work to art collectors around the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been one wild ride I can tell you that . It’s not easy but if you want it enough you make it happen . I found it challenging in the beginning not coming from rich parents and no formal art training. I Started getting involved with Diy Galleries . Started doing my own shows also curating Group shows . I was Always painting live in the streets till last Call on the weekends. Money always comes and goes but I can say in the beginning of being full time I had to get food from food banks and dumpster dive Paint from Sherwin Williams. Steal clothes from behind thrift stores and sell them to Plato’s closest to get supplies . Those times I really cherish the struggle because I remember how big the reward felt when I would sell a painting and be able to get groceries from a real store . I Would have a feeling of being legit and have self worth . Almost like a Pat on the back from your spirit saying it will all be ok .
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Painting and making art out of found objects is something I’ve become known for and I guess a lil different…I like to mix it up when creating . I like to give new life to things we would consider worthless or trash . Exploring and painting spots in the wild I feel like is a big part of my identity. I create because I love it .
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just follow your heart ! Try new things get out there ! Most important put in the hours . Live threw your art make it your existence.
