Check out Omar El-Deeb’s Music & Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar El-Deeb.

Omar, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a musician, music composer/producer, and audio engineer from Egypt, now based in L.A. Born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, I was always curious about music and technology. It wasn’t until I went to college in Cairo that I picked up the guitar, and since then I’ve followed whatever path music has led.

I started a prog rock band in college called SimpleXity, in which I sang, composed and played guitar. Later, I began performing and recording with other artists as a hired gun.

After the Arab Spring in 2011, the live events scene collapsed due to government-imposed curfews. This turned my eye to the studio, I started learning more about music production, and in 2013 I was lucky to have contacted an exceptionally talented composer/producer based in Cairo called Sary Hany who was in the process of expanding his music production business and branding it as Key 66 Productions.

I started as an assistant working my way up to senior composer/producer- handling everything from making music for TV, film, and commercials to producing and engineering top-selling records in the region. My time at Key 66 gave me the chance to sharpen my skills through the diversity of our work, and to this day I’m very appreciative of this period.

By 2016 I had decided to move to California. I set up a small home studio in my West LA apartment, and since then I’ve been exploring the city’s endless possibilities in audio and music work as well as keeping my relations in the Middle East. While there’s still a long way to go, I’m grateful for what LA has offered me so far.

Now that I’m settled, I’m hoping to get back to songwriting and performing which I’ve missed a lot. I’m excited for what happens next, and I already have a few things cooking!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
There are three main categories my work falls into:

– Composing for media:

I play several instruments which, combined with my experience in songwriting and production, makes me a one-stop shop for projects- Film, TV, commercial, documentary, web series- you name it! The valuable relationships I’ve formed with other musicians, composers, producers, arrangers and engineers along my journey have also allowed me to expand my possibilities, and take on bigger projects.

– Producing/mixing for artists:

This includes recording and producing/mixing live bands, songwriting/production for pop songs and everything in between. I’ve collaborated with a diverse array of talented artists and bands- some are top-selling artists in the Middle East, some are garage bands in the suburbs of LA. I enjoy it all!

– Releasing music:

That’s the next tricky part, and it’s not as easy as it seems. The material is there, I’m still learning about how the market for it works, so I don’t want to rush with the release. I’m very excited to get back to the stage though!

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I’m not sure if I can speak for other artists. As for myself, I would say coming from halfway across the globe left me with virtually no network when I first arrived in an industry that relies heavily on connections. However, throughout these two years, I’ve used various resources to get to know other creatives and get the workflow going.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
