Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Tran.
Nina, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My journey as a calligrapher began when I picked up a pointed pen for the first time at the end of 2014. What had started out as a DIY project with my best friend turned into so a discovery of a whole new world! Before I knew it, I was swept away by beautiful letters and (healthily) obsessed with the methodology behind each stroke and letter form.
It’s been an amazing adventure so far. I’ve met and learned from so many kinds, wonderful, and incredibly talented creatives while meeting friends along the way. I’m enjoying every moment with a pen in hand and I’m excited to see what unfolds in the years to come.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
When I’m not caring for my 3 kids, my free time is spent studying, practicing, and teaching — not much time goes into creating artwork (yet).
Although I’ve got a long way to go on this journey, I feel a deep drive within to teach what I’ve learned so far and to help others along their adventure as well.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
If on a tight budget, my advice is to start with the basic supplies and to invest in good quality products.
It may be tempting to buy multiple custom penholders, all the different colored inks and palettes, vintage nibs, etc. and before you know it, your desk is full of supplies that will last you two lifetimes!
So, for someone struggling to focus on their calligraphy due to financial concerns, keep to the basic supplies and seek out recommendations from seasoned calligraphers.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Most of my work can be found on Instagram.
