Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Witos.
Morgan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Those who knew me during the first half of my life have known the artsy side of me. I was in all the art clubs at school, I was a competitive figure skater for 10+ years, and I took several design classes in NYC throughout high school. But after graduating and saying goodbye to competitive figure skating, my artistic side somehow got lost. Not quite sure what I wanted to do next, I went to college and found I favored the challenging math classes, since I happen to have a knack for numbers as well. One thing led to another, I graduated with a finance degree, and ended up working at a law firm handling their accounting. While I enjoyed my years there, I was never passionate about it.
Pretty soon, I married my best friend, and we welcomed our beautiful son into the world. Like most new moms, I found myself taking hundreds of pictures of him every day with my sub-par camera phone. At the beginning of 2014, I decided to buy myself my first real camera and learn how to use it. I owe thanks to my photographer brother for the inspiration. I brought my camera everywhere, took pictures of my son and his friends all day long, and started to get the hang of it. Pretty soon, friends were offering to pay me to take pictures for them, I was being referred to others, and somehow, just one year later… I was booked months ahead of time, and with photography as my only source of income.
Just two months ago, after a very long journey involving multiple miscarriages, infertility, and IVF, I gave birth to my second child – a perfect little girl. While I’ve temporarily cut back on my workload, my camera is still getting plenty of use every day as I document the lives of my own precious little ones.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Because I am a mother myself, the journey of motherhood is something that is profoundly meaningful to me. For that reason, I have narrowed the focus of my business to maternity, and newborns through the first year. I’ve also done several breastfeeding shoots as well. I love capturing the beauty of pregnancy, the freshness of babies that are just days old, and the adoration older children have for their brand new siblings. I also love being able to watch those babies develop, and see how far they’ve come when they come back to me for their one year session. I aim to document memories that my clients can look back on and cherish forever.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
For me, I feel I’ve done my job best when I can incorporate my clients’ ideas and visions into my own artistic style to create images that we both love. The work I am most proud of though, is the work where I was really able to create something new. Where I had my own inspirations, and was able to bring to life exactly what I envisioned.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My most up-to-date work can be found on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/morgankphoto. I also occasionally post on Instagram (Morgan K Photography), and once every several months I will update my official website as well: www.morgankphoto.com.
