Today we’d like to introduce you to Melly B!.
Hi Melly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The proud owner of Photos By Melly B! I was born and raised in Gardena California, a beautiful city in LA. My father raised me and my older brother at a time when it was uncommon for men to be a single parent. He believed in the theory, it takes a village to raise a family. His village consisted of a diverse, multifaceted, and unique bunch of people that were always around. Our house was the house everyone wanted to come to.
My Dad always had company over, which eventually turned into a party. As a young girl, it was exciting for me to sneak and watch the 70’s happening right in front of me. I’m talking about the Afros, the dieshiks, and window pain jeans, with Al Green playing in the background. I remember my Father capturing moments with his  polaroid camera. Not only was he known for his parties, but he was also always snapping photos of everything happening, capturing everyone just having a good time. Angela Davis was a friend of my father’s, before I knew who she was, and would come by often to talk about, what I thought was just some very serious topics and conversation.
After the serious topics were discussed, my Dad would display the photos he took with his Polaroid camera to all His friends. They would get so emotional and delighted, and the serious topics became fun. People would laugh smile and bring up emotions that were genuine, all because of the moments he captured with is camera. Eventually, he would have a ton of content and memories captured over the years. As his friends and family would transition, my father would have these treasures to share with everyone. Moments that could have been forgotten if he would not have done what he loved, capturing moments. I remembered all these emotions growing up, and I decided early that I would love to bring families and friends this type of joy thru my work. I decided to become a professional photographer and capture precious stories for people to relive forever. My ability to pull the essence of all that I capture reveals itself through My work leaving me overjoyed to present to the viewer what some may not know is already there. My gift to you is to showcase the natural essence in who you are for all to see, to align with your character.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles were just simply getting started and believing in myself. Starting an investment in myself was the most nerve-wracking part of developing my business. I invested in a business coach and gained so much understanding of the difference between an amateur and a professional. My Business coach got me to understand that my fears were normal and to break through the doubt and put myself out there. I was challenged with my own self. Making mistakes and learning during the process, but that is growth. Once I got out of my own way, I was ready.

Photography for me has been a cross of visual boundaries that I dictate through my interpretation. I see an image or subject and desire to pull the beauty to you, the observer. Grasping the attention of the audience to find the faint obvious. My obscure angels, my delight for the craft, I’m able to uniquely capture the moments that only existed for that specific second, gaining access to your essence for me to brilliantly capture and reveal through my lens. My passion for photography was once a dream. Throughout the years, I pushed the dream away to grow as a photographer because of life’s challenges and distractions. I found that passion once again and have developed myself into my role as a visual artist one photo at a time.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Keep pushing, don’t stop. When you feel as if you have failed get up and shake it off. Move forward and grow from what you have learned. Just don’t give up! Be optimistic and change your perception of any negative situation.
