Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Monath.
Matt, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been interested in visual arts and realized photography was perfect for me near the end of my college career. I began to hone my craft in college and directly thereafter. Through experimenting with lighting, assisting other photographers, and spending lots of time behind the camera in various disciplines, I’ve learned to find my aesthetic within portraiture photography. Most of my work now involves my signature colorful lighting and post-production, delivering bold and impactful portraiture.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m color-obsessed. Much of my photography work is portraiture, but I also shoot beauty, fashion, lifestyle, product, food, and more. I’m often working colorful lighting into my images. I find a ton of inspiration from the queer community, who are always living their lives unapologetically and boldly. I appreciate that, and I try to work that into my work as well. I try to make sure my work stands out, and when someone is scrolling through the endless content on social media, my work will catch their eye. In my celebrity work, I’m often taking inspiration from what my subjects are known for in pop-culture, whether it is a character they’ve played, something they’ve written, or the music they create. These things all help me craft a concept for a shoot.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Saturation. With Instagram as a non-stop content vortex, and a somewhat decent camera being in everyone’s pocket, it can be hard for an artist to distinguish themselves from the crowd. And to that, I’d say find your own aesthetic and stick to it. People will remember that.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can check out my work on Instagram at @MattMonathPhoto, and on my website at www.MattMonath.com. You may have caught my work on celebs’ social media, in magazines, on book covers, or a billboard! To support, sharing on social media is always great since a ton of work comes my way from to-be subjects sliding into the DMs!
