Check out Lisa Solberg’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Solberg.

Lisa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am in the middle of 5 children from the Midwest. I have always worked my ass off, in everything I do. Sports, school, relationships, my art, it’s all the same to me. I’ve been lucky to travel the world, either young with my family or later by myself. I loved being in school, learning new things in all subject matters. That’s why I decided not to go to art school. I guess for me knowing I was an artist at a young age was enough for me to live my life to the fullest in the process of maturing as an artist. And for me, that was going to a regular school and learning as much as I could, doing what I wanted, basically. I have a hard time with structure in general, I work the best on my own accord, and even though I am quite social, I am somewhat of a lone wolf.

I became a professional athlete during college, and from that was always on the road, pretty much all my classes were self-studies toward the end. I sold my first two paintings during college, one to my philosopher professor and one to my painting professor. Once I retired from skiing due to complications from several injuries, I was lucky to be able to delve myself fully into my art. I moved to Germany for a while, then Chicago, then Southeast Asia and then finally to LA 8 years ago. I knew from a young age I was going to be an artist, a living working artist.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
What- I create large scaled paintings, sculptures, and installations.

Why/How- A nonstop sense of wonderment is mainly what drives me. I feel very grateful for the way I see the world but unsurprisingly gets very overwhelming at times. I spend a lot of effort trying to slow down my mind. I meditate a lot and prepare myself physically as well. By doing this I am creating an arena for actions to take place. The more prepared I am the more naturally these actions come through me when I’m in the studio. Then I just try to leave it all on the field (or artwork). A lot of the sports mantras are parallel to my views on spirituality, and this is what resonates in my work in the end product.

Message- I believe that the closer an artist can stay to their truest self and have the art be a reflection of that, then they are doing their job. My whole life has been as an artist, there was no ah-ha moment, so to speak. My identity as an artist keeps me grounded. In that sense, artists are quite lucky. My goal is to create a sense of spirituality and the sublime, a sense of liberation – someplace between the natural and supernatural. Kinda like a spark, or a moment in time, frozen and suspended.

It’s interesting having such focus on the smallest things in life and watching that inspire and grow into massive works. Sometimes I feel like I’m painting the sky, or sometimes a feeling, and then other times I feel like I’m painting a molecule in a blade of grass, then I realize it’s all the same thing. It’s only our perception that delineates between these things. It’s comforting for me to feel so small in the universe and in homage to that create these larger than life pieces. It’s beautiful.

How can artists connect with other artists?
I think the feeling of being lonely for an artist is only natural. We are dealing with lots of different forces, mostly nothing that you can see or comprehend. Best thing to do is just talk about it with likeminded people, artists or not. I never stress about having an “artist” clique. I just find that very one dimensional and boring. It’s true though that an artist might understand the heart of another artist the most.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best way these days is to just follow my Instagram and sign up for my mailing list!
