Check out Lafayette Azevedo’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lafayette Azevedo.

Lafayette, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve been drawing since I was around 5/6 years old and my love of art came from comic books. Growing up in Canada, my older brother Carlos had comics passed down to him from my mom and these were classic DC comics that have value, well they did. When I saw these comics such as Batman, I’d cut out the characters and use them as action figures. My brother didn’t like that much because these were valuable comics. That got me into the art of the comics. My grandmother bought my brother a Super Friends coloring book and I’d stair at that thing all day. It was the characters designs that got me into wanting to draw. Carlos was also an artist so you know how that goes, the little brother mimicking the older brother.

Over the years it was just practice. No schooling just collecting comics, hanging out at my local comic shop and attending comic conventions that always inspired me to draw. I love to draw comics, kids books, and design logos and still today you can find mine in a comic shop (Pulp Fiction, Long Beach) hanging out talking about pop culture and comics.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I draw what people would consider cartoons/comic art. I’ve drawn comic books, children’s book, designed logos for brands and currently working on my own children’s books. I like to create characters that are fun and can make kids and adults laugh. Recently I helped a startup water company, “Stay Humble H2O” design all the labels, social media content and essential pieces to promote the business. I attend comic conventions as an artist selling prints with popular characters such as Deadpool, Goku, and Rick & Morty. I’m always drawing what I like as it pertains to the majority. I would say I draw for work in the sense that I tend to draw what I feel people want to see and purchase, of course.

At the moment I’m working on a children’s book that is all original and funny. The message of the book is, well it has several such as not being selfish/greedy, don’t pick on others but always see your faults and embrace each other but really it’s about Ice Cream and jokes. I can’t wait for people to see it. It has great art and humor.

You can see my art at www.LafayetteAzevedo.com or Instagram where I post all the time under Lafayette.

How can artists connect with other artists?
This is true because like Golf its a one-man job, no team to root for you as you draw. My best advice is using social media to connect with local artists that have the same interest or conventions. Even if you don’t draw comics or cartoons for people at conventions doesn’t mean your art won’t appeal to the audience. Social media is a great tool to connect with people just my reaching out to them. I’ve got friends on Instagram I’ve never met in person but they host live YouTube events teaching people to draw, talking pop culture and entertaining people that I’m part of on a regular basis all because I would reach out to them on IG and we had the same art interest. One thing for sure, don’t be jealous or envious of another individual art or success because the more open-minded you are to art, the more open people are to creating a friendship.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can catch me on social media on Instagram @ Laffyette or my website www.LafayetteAzevedo.com.

I have a few comic cons lined up for the year in California. I’ll be in Sacramento, Stockton, Anaheim, and Ontario all in the first few months of the year. If you see me under the name Azevedo Bros., don’t be afraid to come by and say hello. I’ll have original art for sale, books and on the spot sketching. If you follow my social media, you’ll get the exact dates for these events. My brother Carlos is always with me selling his art as well because we bother love to draw and someone needs to watch the booth during bathroom breaks.
