Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Doyle.
Karen, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Born and raised here in the valley – Glendale, to be more specific. I had an infinity for art at a young age. My earliest memory when I “woke up”to my artistic desires was when I was five years old and I was in kindergarden and they set up the easels for us to paint. Seriously, it was at that moment where I felt like my life became a lot more interesting! I’ve loved art all my life and still do paint every day.
I made a promise to myself when I was 11 that I would make my living as an artist when I grew up and I’ve kept my promise to this day! It was around that time -11 years old that I started taking oil painting lessons from a private teacher in Toluca Lake, CA . That did wonders for me as it set in motion the passion that I still have to this day for painting in oil paint. In high school I was in an advanced Art class for my age and was given a scholarship to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where I was introduced to a great college. A few years later I happily did attend there and graduated with a BA in Illustration.
Since then, I’ve been painting on different surfaces such as tile, canvas, wood, masonite and mirror. My life as a painter is a continuous journey of curiosity because I never stop learning as an artist. Probably my favorite subject to paint is nature and people -faces to be more specific.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Well my art is in mainly three different categories. Of course, nothing is simple when you’re an artist and you have many interests… So basically, I have my fine art which is my oil painting done on ceramic tile. -These are usually small, 4 x 4 or 6 x 6” paintings that are of iconic images and whimsical trees and flowers. I also have my oil paintings done on very large canvass, 36’x48’ and the subject matter is mostly landscape – specifically the Pacific Ocean and California archictecture done in an impressionist style of painting. I also have my oil paintings done on wood of moody faces – a collection that I created which would be best described as surreal.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Well to be honest with you I am no expert in this area! However, I would have to say that Instagram has been a huge inspiration to me. Every day I see what other people who are just like me are working on and it’s a huge comfort. They have a passion that burns also and that is a remarkable thing to be reminded of every day. Many times, I feel overwhelmed with the talent that’s posted —on a worldwide level —-and it seriously humbles me!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Most of my exhibits have been at the different street fairs and art fairs that are set up for 2 days in different areas of California.
