Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Webber.
Josh, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in Montreal, Canada and spent my time split between there and Halifax, Nova Scotia as a teen to live with my father. After bouncing around from school to school for a while with no clear direction and finally receiving my high school diploma, I then had the random opportunity to attend Arizona State University to pursue an international business degree. About a year or so into the program I got hurt on a boat during a trip overseas and eventually my grades began to slip pretty bad as I was recovering. ASU put me on an academic suspension for missing too many classes then eventually I lost interest in school and in all honesty my life course at the time in general.
I felt like I needed a change so I spent a few weeks soul searching, trying to remember what inspired me and stumbled along an article about the New York Film Academy in NYC. It made me remember my passion for movies growing up. I moved to New York City pretty quickly after that to attend the filmmaking program and within five days I was making my first short film.
Once the program was completed, I moved to Brooklyn, NY while a short film I made called “BATTER UP!” became really popular on the festival circuit winning multiple awards and screening all over the world.
I then made the jump to Los Angeles to start my career and within the first three months I got into a pretty serious car accident on the 101 freeway. After making a full recovery, I decided life was short and used the money from the settlement to self produce and fund my first feature film “AZIENDA” which released nationwide in 2013 as “A BROKEN CODE”.
Since then, I have produced & directed over 8 feature films and endless commercial work content thus far.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a filmmaker and I always loved to tell stories. I gain inspiration from many things yet mostly from personal life experiences. I would like people to be moved emotionally in some way by my films as I progress and hopefully create something that will make the history books someday!
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I qualify success as the ability to do whatever it is that you love or want to do at any point on your own terms. As long as I am happy in the present with whatever it is that I am working on and have positive likeminded people with me in the process, then that is the first level of success in my eyes.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have a film we just released on Netflix last year titled NEVER HEARD and another film we are currently on a screening tour with called DEAR FRANK which will release early 2020 along with a documentary project AMERICAN RACKETS.
