Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Peloso.
Joey, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in central Florida till I was 16 or so, I moved to live with my mom in San Diego back in 2013. I have always been interested in arts and music. Particularly, playing several instruments and then eventually developing an interest in the audio and music industry. I went to an audio engineering school/studio in San Diego when I was 17, gaining experience and developing my skills as an audio engineer and producer. I moved to LA shortly after to expand my career in the music industry. I’ve had a wide range of experience recording anything from hip hop artists to recording clarinets and timpanis in orchestral settings. While at the same time working on my own music and productions mainly focusing on synthesizers, electronic music and hiphop production. Working with lots of different projects and styles has given me insight into my own creativity and music writing. Currently, I work in Glendale at “Mintroom Studios” recording and working with numerous artists.
We’d love to hear more about your music. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a musician and a professional audio engineer. The music I enjoy making the most is hip hop styled beats with a heavy emphasis on sound design and synthesizers transforming sounds that I hear in my head into reality. I use software such as Ableton Live and FL studio and hardware such as obscure soviet era synthesizers. Making music has been a pure pleasure to me and I feel fulfilled just creating and making songs/beats. I like transforming and recording sound. Working in the studio as an audio engineer is another way I create and think of it as sculpting a song and making it sound the best it can out of the speakers. Recording, in general, has a lot of meaning to me. They have the potential to live on forever through recording. NASA launched the voyager ii in the mid 70’s which is currently in interstellar space, On board is a golden record with songs from earth. Including recordings from 1920’s blues artists such as “blind willie Johnson” In a sense, these recordings are beyond all humanity. Waveforms on a golden record billions of miles away from earth. Recording sound can be immortalizing.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
I always think that developing a bit of an entrepreneurial side is key to combating financial concerns. Artists have the ability to think outside the box. Which I think is necessary to make it your living. Find gigs and jobs that align with your artistic side. For me, audio engineering is great because I get to stay working in the studio and do something that is furthering my abilities while at the same time staying in touch with the music. Think about the skills you’ve accumulated as an artist and see where you can put them to work. They’re also a saying, “If you build it, they will come” This has meant a lot to me going through my journey. Money can create anxiety, which can prevent you from focusing on the real mission your art.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have music on Soundcloud and other artists I’ve worked with on Spotify and other streaming sites. Instagram is a good way to see what I’m doing and working on. As I am currently getting together my own projects, I will soon put out for release.
