Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Pochinski.

Jennifer, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story is that I studied art- BFA painting at the University of Hawaii where I grew up. I married a few years later. I became a wife. By the time my first daughter was two, I decided to be just a painter and not a wife as I found them incompatible. I spent the next tumultuous ten years trying to paint myself out of poverty as I wound up living and going through a divorce in Greece with now two children. Thinking I would need a more stable job, I studied Interior Architecture in Athens which I actually loved. When a few design jobs I had did not pan out, a gallerist called me out of the blue. She had seen my work in a friend’s home. She gave me my first show and my life changed. It was the first time a received any validation and it made a world of difference. My daughters and I moved to California in 2010 and life has changed again….

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a figurative painter. I work in oils. I paint the figure because it carries a lot of weight. Lately, I have realized that what is appearing in my work are my feelings about men and about women. We all started out painting from models with the pillows, props draped fabric. Then the work gets more personal and ultimately it becomes confessional.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think you do art because you have to regardless of conditions. I feel a lot of limitations can be catalysts to grow in specific directions. These days, it is obvious it is easier for anyone’s art to be seen because of social media. And it has created sort of a community, which artists need. As a whole, if cities or society value art we all benefit.

Online people can see my work on my website, and social media. I am represented in San Francisco by Dolby Chadwick Gallery and I also show at b.sakata garo in Sacramento. Soon I will have work in England at Tregony Gallery.
