Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabelle Lee.
Hi Isabelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. I have always had a need to be creating something. It started with doodles, origami, and also baking banana nut muffins from a cheaply printed recipe book. Growing up in a highly competitive society, I started training in fine arts starting middle school. While this became the fundamentals to all my creative work now, it leads to a distorted view on art and perfectionism in everything I do. Moving to the United States is a big step for any immigrant, and being 16 while doing so added some challenges. Now being 22, It’s been six years since I moved to work in the creative hub, Los Angeles. I’ve worked on film sets, as a video editor at a hip hop label, did photography that’s been published and continued to bake. I keep up with my fine arts and my oil paintings have been included in an online gallery last year. When someone asks me what I do, it’s extremely hard to give them a quick answer. I believe all my work from different mediums benefits each other in that every medium expands my ability to express. That is what it comes down to me, so I would put it is as that I’m a creative.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge for me was the thought that I had to choose one job and stick to it for the rest of my life. It limited and pressured me which lead to feeling constricted. Now I believe it is important to have a specialty, but there is also a demand for creatives who can wear many different hats. A demand for people who are Jack of all trades.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My proudest work would be my oil paintings. It embodies the fundamental training I have invested in for years and taught me that enjoying the process is just as important as the outcome.
How do you think about luck?
I was extremely lucky to have the option to move to LA and meet the people who’ve taught and helped me along the way. However, I believe luck only works with those who have prepared themselves to receive it.
