Today we’d like to introduce you to Griff Clawson.
Griff, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My musical story began when I got a $30 guitar from bed bath and beyond one year for Christmas (even though we’re Jewish) and I was immediately hooked. I started writing songs about a year after I got my first guitar, and mostly because I was too lazy to learn other people’s songs (lol). I played and sung and performed music because it was my passion, but treated it more like a hobby until about halfway through college at UCLA when I realized that I probably didn’t want to sit behind a desk my whole life working for somebody else… so I started writing more, working with other artists and writers and thankfully met a lot of talented people that gave me the confidence and helped needed to take my next steps. Since graduation, I’ve been working on a lot of new music… which I should really start to put out – soon!! I promise, and I’m very excited.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art comes from my heart and I want people to be able to dance, cry, laugh, and love when they listen to my music the same way I do when I make it.
It took me a while to realize what I wanted to say with my music but my goal every time I write and produce a song is to take personal stories and package them in a way that other people can see themselves in. That’s what all of my musical heroes have done and it’s the best feeling ever when someone reaches out to say how much they feel like I was telling their story with a song – cuz really that’s what life is, a collection of stories good and bad and capturing a feeling is what making music is all about.
It sounds cheesy but I honestly make music because it runs through me at all hours of the day and it would be harder to not make it than it is to make it haha. Building a life around music isn’t necessarily easy, but it’s what I love and I’m in love with the process.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think about this sometimes when I’m creating and it pushes me in two different directions.
On one hand, I want my music to be a place people can go to escape from all of the things unfolding around the world every minute. Breaks from everything are really important.
On the other hand, I think it’s kind of my job to take my experiences of and feelings about everything that’s going on in the world and talk about it.
One thing I know for sure is there’s always something to write about lately.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have music on all of the things that music lives on!! Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music, etc.!!
I post things that I do with my days and news about my music on Instagram – and the best thing people can do to support me is to save the songs they love and tell their friends “hey, this kid ain’t so bad, you should give it a listen!”
But only if you like the music!
