Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Freeman.
Grace, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When I was younger, I played in a band with my friend and mentor Brent Samson, who was my guitar teacher at the time. We ended up recording 70 original Love Songs together in tribute to The Magnetic Fields “69 Love Songs” record of 1999. After that, we joined another band called The Moon Police and released one “the Lost Go Sailing By.” Since I’ve been playing in various other bands, with some of my favorite songwriters including Sasha Evans, Dylan Kanner, Rachel Perry, and Lauren Rowe.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I started writing music when I was 10 years old because I heard a song that Regina Spektor wrote called Fidelity and I thought it was the greatest thing in the world at the time. After falling in love with her repertoire, I became obsessed with the art of writing melodies, which is my foremost passion for music! I love melodic music- anywhere from Tchaikovsky to The Cure to Tom Waits. Lyrics are more reflective and personal to me, and a lot of times give me writer’s block, while melodies tend to flow out effortlessly.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Go to shows, play shows, meet musicians, never stop creating!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My music is on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, etc. I have three albums out under three different band names which can be confusing. Grace Freeman “Shadow” is my solo album, and then I have an album called “70 Love Songs” under Gal Musette from my first project with Brent Samson. Then, “The Lost Go Sailing By” by The Moon Police. And I’m releasing an album in 2020 that I’m extremely excited about.
