Today we’d like to introduce you to Darius Coleman.
Darius, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is Darius Coleman and I’m an emerging artist from Philadelphia, PA. I grew up singing in church and was constantly around creative energy. For a while, I thought I wanted to be a dancer and began pursuing that aggressively around age seven. Once beginning my freshman year at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts as a dance major, I quickly learned that I wasn’t as passionate about dance as I thought. My sophomore year I became a vocal minor and realized after a transformative encounter with then schoolmate, now multi-Grammy nominee, Jazmine Sullivan, that music was my passion. She asked me very directly, “do you know you can sing? Do you realize that you have one of those voices..that your voice is special?” That conversation ignited the fire in me to take music seriously and put me on the path to becoming the artist I am today. From then till now I never stopped chasing my dream and I’m happy to say that the seeds that were sown throughout the years are most certainly blossoming now. Two years ago I started a creative agency and indie music label with my family called North 13th in honor of my grandmother’s street in Philly and I’m proud to say that it’s possible to do what you love with who you love. I’ve been blessed to write for Fox’s hit show EMPIRE and work with some of music’s biggest talent including Timbaland, Babyface, John Legend and others. I moved to LA one year ago have been lending my voice to Kanye West as an original member of the Sunday Service collective and am the recent winner of NBC’s new breakout show SONGALND as the writer of Kelsea Ballerini’s smash hit “Better Luck Next Time.” Persistence, dedication and hard work have been my breakfast, lunch and dinner and I truly believe that there’s nothing that can stop me because God’s favor is with me. As I continue along my journey, I am reminded that I am only one part of a much bigger picture and I’m grateful that God trusted me enough to bestow upon me the gifts he has. I encourage anyone reading this that the only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves. With God, ALL things are possible!
We’d love to hear more about your work. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a singer, songwriter and creative tastemaker. I know unequivocally that God placed me here to be a light amidst the darkness and to utilize my voice to spread His light. My message is simple. LOVE. My intention is to spread love through my music and to inspire others to do the same in whatever way they can in their respective field of influence.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I certainly can’t speak for all artists as we all have different experiences. However, I would guess that a challenge for most of us is finding the ways to be seen/heard by an audience. In a world of over saturation, finding a way to cut through can be quite difficult even when you are immensely talented. Discovering the resilience in one’s self to keep going amidst the adversity takes a great degree of strength and courage and that, in my opinion, is the biggest difference between those who succeed and those who don’t. Those who are willing to risk it all for their dream are often the ones who also experience the biggest reward.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
